Puerto Vallarta Residents Join National March to Defend Animal Rights

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco — A small yet determined group of approximately twenty animal rights advocates gathered in Puerto Vallarta this Sunday morning to participate in the National March in Defense of Animal Rights. The march, part of a nationwide mobilization, aimed to raise awareness about animal abuse and advocate for stronger legislative protections for animals across Mexico.

The demonstrators began their peaceful march at the Agustín Flores Contreras sports complex, making their way to the iconic Malecón Arches. Holding signs and chanting slogans, participants emphasized the importance of stricter penalties for individuals who mistreat or kill animals.

The Puerto Vallarta contingent joined other cities across the country in this synchronized effort to urge lawmakers to take immediate action on animal welfare issues. The national movement seeks not only to address animal abuse but also to secure significant changes in Mexican law to protect animal rights.

Key Legislative Demands

One of the primary demands of the marchers and participating organizations is the legal recognition of animals as “sentient beings” in the Mexican Constitution and the Federal Civil Code. This proposal underscores the need to formally acknowledge animals’ capacity to experience pain, suffering, and emotions.

Organizers explained that recognizing animals as sentient beings would help establish a comprehensive legal framework to protect their rights and improve their welfare. Such a status would align Mexican law with international standards on animal rights and welfare.

In addition to constitutional recognition, marchers called for the creation of a General Law on Animal Welfare. This proposed legislation would involve collaboration between civil associations, international non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and independent experts. Advocates believe that a comprehensive law is essential to guarantee the protection, care, and ethical treatment of animals throughout Mexico.
