Cabo Arch beach closure

Black flag flies over Cabo Arch beach closure

There’s sand under the Arch again—and a black flag over it. Harbor authorities shut the tiny, newly formed beach at Land’s End and restricted access to Lover’s Beach after recent rescues and reports of water taxis dropping visitors in a dangerous surf zone. The move came October 1, 2025, and it’s about currents, not headlines. If you’re headed out by boat, you can still see the Arch—don’t expect to step off onto that postcard-perfect sand until conditions ease.

Cabo Arch beach closure

The harbor master in Cabo San Lucas posted a black flag and closed the small, temporary beach beneath the Arch, while also restricting access to Playa del Amor (Lover’s Beach). The decision followed recent rescues and reports that some water taxis were dropping passengers on the sand at Land’s End, a zone where powerful currents collide. Officials warned operators that they can be sanctioned for unsafe drop-offs. The closure took effect October 1, 2025.

Why authorities moved fast

When a pocket of sand appears under the Arch, it draws crowds—and trouble. This beach isn’t permanent; it surfaces only in rare windows when currents pile up sand. The spectacle returned this week, but the surf didn’t cooperate. ENSAR, the Navy’s search-and-rescue unit, responded to incidents days before the order. The harbor master said some visitors even tried to swim from Divorce Beach toward the Arch, a risky crossing where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez. Hence, the black flag, which in Los Cabos means the shoreline is closed.

The phenomenon—and the rules—behind the closure

Locals know the Arch beach comes and goes with shifting sand and tides, sometimes years apart. This season’s reappearance coincided with turbulent conditions that made landings unsafe. City bulletins in recent weeks have also reminded visitors what the flag system means: black is a hard stop, red signals dangerous surf, and lesser flags still demand caution. The same playbook has closed other beaches—El Médano among them—when swells or storms spiked risk. The order at Land’s End will lift once currents settle; until then, boats should stay in viewing-only mode.

What’s open now
You can still tour the bay by boat and photograph the Arch from a safe distance. For swimming, officials point people to calmer, guarded beaches and to check the day’s flag at the entrance. The message remains the same: obey lifeguards, avoid unauthorized drop-offs, and stay out of closed zones.
