Puerto Vallarta will hold the first edition of the Festival Internacional de Poesía de Puerto Vallarta from June 15 to 21, bringing poets from 10 countries and 33 local poets into a week of free cultural programming.
The opening event is scheduled for Monday, June 15, at 7 p.m. at Los Arcos del Malecón, according to the festival announcement. Admission will be free.
A full program is expected to be released on Friday, June 12, through the festival’s social media channels. The early schedule includes readings, workshops, open-mic events, music-backed poetry, and activities aimed at children and emerging writers.
Free poetry events planned across the city
Festival organizers said the program will take poetry to several points in Puerto Vallarta through free readings, workshops, and conferences. A public radio preview also listed roundtables, poetry readings, and performances among the planned activities.
The lineup includes Mexican poets Mario Bojórquez and Ricardo Castillo. Luis Armenta Malpica is listed as the poet to be honored during the festival.
One of the announced activities is a Chinese calligraphy workshop led from Taiwan. Other programming includes creative writing workshops, children’s activities, and poetry presented with live music.
The festival has support from the municipal government, the Instituto Vallartense de Cultura, and the city’s Economic Promotion and Tourism office. Municipal officials presented the event as a way to strengthen local literature, cultural exchange, and public access to poetry.
A new name in Vallarta’s cultural calendar
Puerto Vallarta has hosted international poetry activity before, including Letras en la Mar, an earlier literary gathering tied to the University of Guadalajara. This new festival is being presented as the first edition under the name Festival Internacional de Poesía de Puerto Vallarta.
The event adds another free arts program to the city’s public cultural calendar, which already brings crowds downtown for festivals, civic events, concerts, and public art gatherings. People planning to attend should watch for the final venue list once the full schedule is published. The opening night is confirmed for Los Arcos del Malecón, but organizers have said the weeklong program will move through different parts of the municipality.
