Before sunrise on a February Sunday, families and their dogs gathered in Cabo San Lucas. It was the city’s first municipal dog walk, built around a simple rule. Bring pet supplies instead of paying a fee. Volunteers collected kibble and cleaning products for local rescue groups. Organizers also shared quick reminders on leashes, vet care, and sterilization. A second walk is already scheduled in San José del Cabo, and the first turnout set the pace.
A first walk before the heat
At 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, February 22, Cabo San Lucas tested a new kind of community event: a municipal dog walk designed for families. Participants met near the Hotel Tesoro along the boulevard Lázaro Cárdenas, then moved as a group on a set route. The gathering included small, medium, and large dogs, each managed on leash. The walk was called “La Ruta que más te incumbe X Los Cabos” and was framed as a pilot for future pet-friendly activities. Organizers stressed that it was not a race and that there was no timing. Instead, the goal was a calm pace that kept dogs safe. Start time mattered, too. Early hours reduce heat exposure, especially for older dogs and short-nosed breeds. The municipality’s first regidor, José Manuel Larumbe Pineda, led the activity with support from local volunteer groups and city offices. To keep order, the event used simple logistics, including grouping by dog size for spacing and control.
Donations replace entry fees
There was no entry fee. Instead, families registered by bringing donations in kind, mainly dog food and some cleaning supplies used in shelters. That approach kept the event accessible while still producing a concrete benefit. Volunteers collected the items at check-in, then set them aside for distribution after the route ended. Municipal officials said the supplies would support three local animal-welfare groups: Baja Barkers, Ternuritas, and Pro Animal. The city said the supplies would be delivered directly to the groups that run refuges and foster networks. For organizations that depend on private support, food and disinfectants often cover the basics that budgets do not. Organizers also said future walks will keep a limited capacity so pets can move safely as a group. At the finish, participants received recognition and medals alongside their dogs. The gesture was simple, but it turned a one-off morning walk into a public signal that caring for animals is a shared responsibility.
A message about responsible pet care
The walk was also used for responsible pet care messaging. Organizers said short “capsules” of advice were shared before and during the activity. The reminders focused on leashes, basic training, hydration, and picking up waste in public spaces. Participants were also asked to bring dogs in good health and keep them under control at all times. Officials highlighted local access points for veterinary care, including campaigns coordinated with public health and environmental protection offices. A key theme was sterilization, framed as a practical step to reduce unwanted litters and pressure on shelters. For many residents, including newcomers still learning local rules, these events can double as informal orientation. The municipality has scheduled a second walk for Sunday, March 1, in San José del Cabo. It will start at the Unidad Deportiva Rodrigo Aragón Ceseña, near the INDEM offices, at an earlier time. Organizers said they want the series to continue building links among families, volunteers, and city agencies that handle animal welfare.
