Los Cabos Readies Hurricane Plan Before Storm Season

Los Cabos Readies Hurricane Plan Before Storm Season

Los Cabos is finalizing its hurricane planning ahead of the Pacific season. Municipal and state officials say the work includes shelters, evacuation routes, emergency brigades, and inter-agency coordination. The timing matters for residents, foreign homeowners, and visitors in a destination where heavy rain can quickly affect roads, arroyos, and hillside areas. The plan also comes as forecasters expect an active 2026 Pacific cyclone season.

Los Cabos prepares hurricane response plan before season begins

Los Cabos has installed its Civil Protection Council and sworn in emergency response brigades ahead of the 2026 rainy and cyclone season.

The council is meant to coordinate public agencies before, during, and after storms. Local planning includes temporary shelters, evacuation protocols, transportation logistics, and emergency communication.

The move comes just before the Pacific hurricane season, which officially begins May 15 and runs through November 30. Los Cabos officials said preparations begin before the first storm forms, rather than waiting for a system to threaten the coast.

More than 800 people are expected to take part in the local brigades. They include municipal and state personnel assigned to public safety, emergency response, and community protection.

Shelters and evacuation plans are part of the work

Authorities said the response plan includes opening temporary shelters and reviewing evacuation procedures. The municipality has also been inspecting shelter sites before the season begins.

Those inspections focus on building safety, access routes, basic services, operating capacity, and supplies. The goal is to have spaces ready for families who may need to leave homes in risk zones.

For residents in Los Cabos, this planning is tied to familiar storm-season risks. Heavy rain can flood streets, fill arroyos, damage roads, and isolate neighborhoods. These impacts can happen even when a storm does not make direct landfall.

The planning also matters for foreign residents and visitors who may not know local shelter locations, evacuation routes, or official alert systems. Officials are urging households, businesses, and institutions to have their own basic emergency plan.

Baja California Sur faces an active Pacific outlook

State officials have said Baja California Sur is preparing for a potentially active season. The official 2026 outlook calls for 18 to 21 tropical systems in the Pacific.

That forecast includes 9 to 10 tropical storms, 5 to 6 Category 1 or 2 hurricanes, and 4 to 5 major hurricanes. Major hurricanes are Category 3, 4, or 5 systems.

Seasonal forecasts do not predict exact landfalls. They show the expected level of activity across the ocean basin. Still, an active Pacific season increases the likelihood of storm-related impacts along Mexico’s Pacific coast.

Baja California Sur has a long record of tropical cyclone impacts. State officials have said prevention, early warnings, and coordination between agencies will remain priorities during the season.

Coordination extends beyond Los Cabos

The Los Cabos council is part of a broader state response effort. Baja California Sur has also installed its state Civil Protection Council for the season.

State planning includes cleaning and desilting arroyos, updating emergency programs, reviewing vulnerable zones, and strengthening early-warning systems. Officials also said the state has 166 temporary shelters and is looking to expand capacity with help from the hotel sector.

In Los Cabos, coordination includes municipal departments, state authorities, federal agencies, and emergency services. The work covers public safety, water, health, education, and transportation.

For the public, the main message is preparation before storms approach. Residents are being encouraged to monitor official information, know nearby shelters, and avoid crossing flooded roads or arroyos during heavy rain.
