Cancún gets a new orchestra and a free first concert

Cancún’s new Municipal Chamber Orchestra is preparing for its first official performance, giving the city a new publicly backed ensemble after a selection process that began earlier this year. The debut concert, titled “Redescubriendo los Clásicos,” is scheduled for May 31 at Teatro de la Ciudad. Admission will be free, but tickets must be requested before the performance. The program brings together well-known classical composers and Mexican works in the orchestra’s first public test.

Cancún’s new orchestra sets first official concert

Cancún’s new Municipal Chamber Orchestra will hold its first official concert on May 31 at Teatro de la Ciudad, where the city-backed ensemble will present “Redescubriendo los Clásicos” at 6 p.m.

The concert is free. Tickets will be available at the theater starting two hours before the performance, according to the published event details.

The program will include works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Antonio Vivaldi, and Béla Bartók, along with pieces by Mexican composers. A previous report on the orchestra’s formation said the debut program would include Vivaldi’s “Summer” from the Violin Concerto in G minor, RV 315, and Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances.

How the orchestra was formed

The orchestra comes out of a municipal call issued by the Benito Juárez government through the Instituto de la Cultura y las Artes. The city invited musicians who play violin, viola, cello, or double bass to register by March 27.

Auditions were scheduled from April 6 to April 10 at Teatro 8 de Octubre, where applicants were evaluated before a selection committee. The municipality said at the time that the process was intended to integrate the new Compañía de la Orquesta de Cámara Municipal.

La Jornada Maya reported that Carlos López, head of the municipal culture institute, described the orchestra as an addition to Cancún’s existing municipal artistic companies, which include theater, choir, and dance. The same report said the orchestra is expected to begin a series of monthly presentations after its debut.

The new concert also fits into a broader run of public cultural programming in Cancún. Vallarta Daily recently reported on Cancún’s late-April cultural agenda, which included events at Teatro de la Ciudad, Teatro 8 de Octubre, and other local venues.

Free tickets before the performance

The first concert is scheduled for Sunday, May 31, at 6 p.m. at Teatro de la Ciudad de Cancún. Organizers said free tickets will be released at the theater two hours before the concert starts.
