Cancún removing vendors from main avenues before World Cup crowds

Cancún removing vendors from main avenues before World Cup crowds

Cancún is tightening control over some of its busiest avenues before the 2026 World Cup travel season. The city is not hosting matches, but officials expect the resort hub to receive thousands of visitors moving through the Mexican Caribbean. The operations target street vendors, windshield washers, and people working at major intersections, raising questions about safety, public image, and how tourist cities manage informal work before global events.

Cancún clears main avenues before World Cup crowds

Cancún authorities have expanded operations to remove street vendors, windshield washers, and people asking motorists for money from major avenues and intersections.

The work is part of a broader urban image and public order effort ahead of World Cup-related travel and other international events expected to bring more visitors to the Mexican Caribbean.

Municipal officials say the operations are focused on high-traffic corridors, especially areas used by tourists and airport traffic. The city is not one of Mexico’s official World Cup match sites, but Quintana Roo officials have promoted Cancún as a major entry point for fans because of its airport connections and hotel infrastructure.

City focuses on major traffic corridors

The operations are being led by the municipal Directorate of Commerce and Services in Public Roads, with support from security authorities.

One of the main focus areas is Bulevar Luis Donaldo Colosio, a key route into Cancún and toward the airport. Authorities said vendors have been found selling items such as seeds, candy, drinks, and snacks along the corridor.

Officials also reported inspections at major intersections, including areas near Kilómetro Cero, Plaza de Toros, and Malecón Américas. Other points include sections of Bonampak, Kabah, Nichupté, Cobá, and López Portillo avenues.

The city says some people are removed from these locations daily. In cases involving vendors, municipal commerce officials handle administrative procedures. When the case involves people asking for money or performing at intersections, security personnel may intervene.

World Cup travel adds pressure on Cancún

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Mexico’s match cities are Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey, not Cancún.

Still, Cancún is expected to play a supporting role due to its airport and tourism infrastructure. State officials have described the Cancún International Airport as a major hub for visitors moving between host cities and beach destinations.

Quintana Roo officials have also said the state has spent more than a year preparing for World Cup-related travel. Their plans include security, mobility, tourism services, and coordination with federal and municipal agencies.

For local residents and foreign visitors, the visible result may be a stronger official presence on main roads and tourist corridors. The city is presenting the actions as a safety and image measure, especially in areas with heavy vehicle movement.

Informal work remains part of the story

The operations also point to a familiar issue in Mexican tourist cities. Informal street work is common in high-traffic areas, especially where people can sell quickly to drivers or pedestrians.

Authorities argue that vendors at intersections can pose safety risks to drivers, pedestrians, and vendors themselves. They also say the city needs to keep public spaces orderly as Cancún receives more international attention.

At the same time, removing vendors does not address the economic reasons many people work in the street. That tension often becomes more visible before major events, when governments try to present public spaces as cleaner and more controlled.

Cancún’s operations are expected to continue in the coming weeks as the World Cup approaches. Officials have described the program as permanent, not a one-day sweep.
