CFE expands Playa del Carmen power supply capacity

CFE Plans Temporary Power Boost for Cancun Corridor

A temporary power fix is moving through environmental review for one of Mexico’s busiest Caribbean corridors. CFE’s proposal would add mobile diesel generation in Cancun, where rising heat and electricity use have strained supply across the Riviera Maya. The plan is time-limited, but it includes details that residents and businesses will want to watch, including where the units would operate, how much capacity they would add, and how long the equipment is expected to remain in place.

CFE seeks temporary capacity for Cancun and Riviera Maya

The Comisión Federal de Electricidad plans to install two mobile generating units in Cancun to help meet rising power demand in the Cancun-Riviera Maya corridor.

Each unit would generate 25 megawatts, giving the project a total added capacity of 50 megawatts. The units would be placed at the Cancun electrical substation and the Cancun Turbogas Central, where CFE already has power infrastructure.

The project is described as temporary. CFE expects installation to take about two months. The equipment would then support the grid during a limited operating period before being removed.

How the generators would work

The units would run on diesel fuel and send electricity through circuits to a power transformer. From there, the electricity would connect to CFE’s Cancun substation for distribution through the National Electric System.

CFE’s current Cancun Turbogas Central has 72 megawatts of generation capacity. With the two mobile units, the site’s available capacity would rise to 122 megawatts during the temporary project’s operation.

The plan also includes 11 hours of continuous daily operation during a six-month period of higher demand. That schedule could be extended if the national grid operator requires more electricity.

Heat and demand are driving the plan

The proposal comes as electricity use continues to rise in Quintana Roo and the broader peninsular region. High heat increases power consumption, especially when homes, hotels, restaurants, and businesses use more air conditioning.

The environmental filing for the Cancun project places the investment at 254.4 million pesos. A separate plan for Cozumel would add a 25 megawatt diesel generator there, bringing the two projects to a combined investment of about 381 million pesos.

CFE presented the Cancun project to the federal environmental authority for review. The request was still listed as under study. The timing is tied to having the units ready before summer 2026.

A bridge while larger projects move forward

The temporary units are meant to help reduce pressure on the local grid during periods when demand rises sharply. They are not presented as a long-term replacement for permanent generation and transmission work.

The Cancun units would later be removed. The plan refers to new-generation facilities being built parallel to the Tren Maya route, which would eventually replace the need for temporary equipment.

For residents and businesses in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and nearby areas, the proposal is another sign that electricity demand is now a daily-life issue, especially during the hottest months.
