Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – In a move aimed at addressing longstanding waste management challenges, Puerto Vallarta’s City Council approved a new concession for the permanent collection and disposal of urban solid waste. During a regular session on Friday, officials granted the service concession to Red Recolector, S.A. de C.V., in association with Red Ambiental, S.A. de C.V., for a term of up to 15 years following the signing of the respective contract.
Under the newly approved agreement, the concessionaires will assume responsibilities for the collection, transportation, treatment, and final disposal of municipal solid waste. City authorities have emphasized that this step is intended to resolve a persistent issue that residents have faced for years, placing the municipality on a more sustainable and efficient path in terms of waste management.
Puerto Vallarta Mayor Luis Munguía noted that this decision will translate into cost savings, particularly in areas such as spare parts, fuel, and tires, while ensuring that collection is carried out efficiently. He further stated that the city will closely monitor and hold the company accountable for meeting all provisions outlined in the contract.
In addition to the newly implemented agreement, the municipality will continue to manage garbage collection in the rural zone and Las Palmas district. These areas are located closest to the landfill, allowing for a swift response in emergencies. The mayor also assured that temporary workers currently employed in the Public Cleaning area will be reassigned to other City Council departments if necessary, ensuring stability within the workforce.
With the implementation of this concession, local officials anticipate a marked improvement in waste management services. The decision represents a significant step forward, as Puerto Vallarta seeks to establish itself as a national example in environmental stewardship and responsible waste collection practices.
Whether or not the new private company can deliver on its commitments, where for decades others have failed, is yet to be seen.
