Los Cabos, BCS – This Sunday, July 13, at 6:00 a.m., Cabo San Lucas residents and visitors can make a tangible impact on the region’s coastline by joining the Playa El Médano Aquatic Services Entrepreneurs Association AC and local authorities for a major beach cleanup at Aguajitos Creek, near Tamaral Street.
Víctor Hugo Castro Martínez, coordinator of the General Secretariat in Cabo San Lucas, welcomed representatives of the Association at a meeting where organizers extended a public invitation. Castro Martínez praised the group’s grassroots commitment and underscored how hands-on efforts like this help maintain the natural beauty that draws thousands of tourists each year.
“Working side by side with citizens is critical to preserving our beaches and waterways,” said Castro Martínez. “With every piece of trash we remove, we safeguard marine life and protect the image of Los Cabos as a world-class destination.”
Since its founding, the Playa El Médano Aquatic Services Entrepreneurs Association has made annual cleanup drives a cornerstone of its environmental mission. Fidelmar Castillo Magaña, the Association’s secretary, noted that volunteers have hauled away more than 300 tons of debris from local streams and shorelines during past events.
“Our team focuses on intercepting trash upstream before it reaches the bay,” Castillo Magaña explained. “This year, the Delegation is supporting us with two dump trucks and extra staff, which will let us cover more ground and clear even more waste.”
Participants will gather at Aguajitos Creek at 6:00 a.m. equipped with gloves, trash bags, and a shared dedication to cleaner beaches. Organizers encourage everyone—families, students, hotel staff, and boat operators—to join. Glass-bottom boat companies, sailboat captains, and aquatic tour guides have all pledged to send teams, reinforcing the region’s tourism industry and environmental stewardship.
Raúl Olivares Durán, president of the Association, highlighted the broader benefits of these community cleanups. “Beyond cleaner sand and water, our work strengthens Cabo San Lucas’ reputation,” he said. “Tourists expect pristine beaches. When we deliver, we support local businesses and inspire visitors to return.”
Beyond litter removal, the event aims to raise awareness about waste reduction and responsible disposal. Informational booths will provide tips on recycling and single-use plastic alternatives. Children’s activities will teach younger volunteers about marine ecosystems and the dangers of pollution.
Los Cabos business owners and residents see the cleanup as more than a one-off effort. By partnering with the General Secretariat, they hope to spark year-round initiatives—like monitoring creek health and installing more trash receptacles along popular coastal routes.
