Eight Coeneo Police Detained Over Alleged CJNG Ties

Eight Coeneo Police Detained Over Alleged CJNG Ties

Coeneo, Michoacán, June 12, 2026 – Michoacán authorities detained eight people who identified themselves as municipal police in Coeneo, including the town’s public security director, in a case now under review for alleged links to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

The arrests were reported on Friday after an interagency operation in Coeneo, about 84 kilometers from Morelia. The Fiscalía General del Estado said investigators are reviewing possible drug dealing and bribery after agents found suspected narcotics and weapons during a vehicle inspection, according to the state prosecution account released through local outlets.

The case follows a June 10 attack in La Mojonera, Nahuatzen, where five Guardia Civil officers were killed, and five others were injured during a patrol. Michoacán’s security agency said the officers were “the target of an armed attack,” according to state security reporting on the Nahuatzen ambush.

The allegation prosecutors now have to prove

Initial reports say investigators are reviewing whether the Coeneo officers acted as “punteros,” or lookouts, for an armed CJNG cell tied to the Nahuatzen attack. That allegation has not been proven in court.

PVDN is treating the cartel link as an allegation unless prosecutors file formal charges and a judge upholds the case. The Fiscalía has not publicly released the names of the eight detainees, the specific weapons seized, or whether any weapons were service-issued.

The state prosecutor’s office said the group wore tactical clothing and identified themselves as members of a municipal police corporation. After checking their vehicle, agents reported finding suspected drugs and weapons. The eight were turned over to the Ministerio Público, which will determine their legal status.

A regional case, not a Vallarta case

Michoacán borders Jalisco, and state and federal authorities have been examining whether municipal police forces in western Michoacán have helped criminal groups monitor patrols, protect routes, or avoid security operations.

A similar case surfaced earlier this year in Ecuandureo, where 11 municipal police were accused of aiding CJNG. Michoacán’s security ministry later said a judge linked the officers to criminal proceedings after they were detained with suspected methamphetamine and patches tied to alleged criminal cells.

State-level reporting has also described probes into municipal police forces near the Jalisco border. The central question is whether local police units in those areas can operate independently in zones where cartel groups rely on lookouts, road control, and advance warning of patrols.

Nahuatzen ambush adds pressure to the investigation

The Nahuatzen attack has intensified scrutiny of Michoacán’s security operation in the Meseta Purépecha. Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla said Friday that the state is coordinating with federal Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch and that authorities believe the armed cell fled toward the border area between Michoacán, Guanajuato, and Jalisco.

The broader federal deployment in Michoacán has been under review since the killing of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo and the launch of Plan Paricutín, a federal and state security push aimed at cartel routes and high-risk areas.

PVDN has also tracked CJNG activity in Michoacán beyond armed attacks. In April, authorities reported the arrest of a suspected CJNG recruiter tied to violence around Uruapan, part of a broader pattern involving recruitment, local protection networks, and pressure on municipal institutions.
