Now in its 13th year, the ESpontáneo festival opened under the iconic arches of Puerto Vallarta’s Malecón. Festival director Luis Munguía introduced the theme “La danza como acto de cuidado” (“dance as an act of care”), emphasizing how movement can build community and well-being. At the opening event, the organizers presented the Paloma Martínez Prize to Mexican choreographer Tatiana Zugazagoitia, recognizing her work in inclusive dance. With dancers and artists from Mexico, Spain, and Lithuania on the bill, the festival promises a rich cross-cultural exchange.
Over the coming weeks, ESpontáneo will fill theaters, squares, and parks with dance performances and workshops. Many events are free and open to the public. Highlights include a collaborative piece by Mexico’s Carmen Larraz and Lithuania’s Laima Kaušelienė on themes of healing and community care. The festival also runs educational programs: local students and participants from a rehabilitation center for special needs are integrated into rehearsals and showings. Organizers say these elements reinforce the festival’s goal of art as a form of social care and cohesion.
ESpontáneo Dance Festival Brings Art and Care to the Malecón
This year’s program features both established and emerging artists. For example, Ramón Towers – a leading dancer from Jalisco – will explore ecological themes in a new solo. Workshops in contemporary and classical techniques will be held at cultural centers throughout the city. In total, ESpontáneo expects over 200 local and international participants. With Puerto Vallarta’s seaside promenade as a backdrop, the festival has a festive, communal spirit: families can watch street performances, tourists can attend evening concerts, and community forums will discuss how art can improve society. Festival co-director Paloma Martínez herself remarked that dance, science, and social reflection all meet here – truly making dance “un acto de cuidado” for body and community.
On closing night at the same Malecon amphitheater, all participants will share the stage for a collective finale, highlighting ESpontáneo’s collaborative ethos. The festival underscores Puerto Vallarta’s vibrant arts scene and its commitment to cultural dialogue. In the words of a visiting choreographer: “This festival shows how art cares for people.”
