Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, August 18, 2026 – Five coastal zones remained closed to swimming Tuesday as lifeguards kept red and purple flags posted at both major river mouths and three beaches near Marina Vallarta.
The restrictions apply at the mouth of the Cuale River, Playa Holi at the mouth of the Pitillal River, Westin Regina Beach, Marriott Beach and Boca Negra Beach, according to the latest update from the Puerto Vallarta Civil Protection and Fire Department.
Under the municipal beach flag system, a red flag prohibits entry into the water. A purple flag warns that wildlife presents a hazard. When both colors are posted, swimmers should remain out even when the surf appears manageable.
Civil Protection estimated waves at approximately 50 centimeters Tuesday. That relatively modest height does not override the red and purple restrictions, which account for risks beyond wave size.
Seven monitored beaches remained under yellow flags, meaning swimming was allowed only with caution. Those locations were Palmares, Conchas Chinas, Los Muertos, Burros, Camarones South, Camarones North and Playa de Oro.
Tuesday’s report keeps the same five zones under the strictest warnings reported on August 13. The continuing pattern concentrates the closures around the Cuale and Pitillal river outlets and the northern hotel and Marina beach corridor.
The update follows a separate move this week to expand crocodile alert training among hotel personnel, emergency crews and government agencies involved in coastal safety.
Beach conditions can change during the day. Flags posted at each beach and instructions from lifeguards take precedence over the morning report, particularly near river mouths and other areas carrying red warnings.
