Vallarta Expands Crocodile Alert Training to Hotels

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, August 17, 2026 – Puerto Vallarta’s aquatic rescue team has brought its crocodile-sighting alert system into a wider coastal training program that begins with hotel staff, linking municipal beach warnings with workers who routinely communicate with guests along the shoreline.

Civil Protection and Fire Department director Misael López Muro led the Vallarta delegation during the first session of the “Coexistence with Crocodilians in Jalisco’s Coastal Municipalities” program on August 14. The course was held at Meliá Puerto Vallarta and included government agencies, scientists, conservation groups, fishing representatives, hoteliers, and legislators.

Puerto Vallarta personnel attended the training and also taught part of it. The municipal rescue agency presented its beach risk alert and communication system, explaining the procedures used to notify the public when a crocodile is reported along the coast.

The city’s role was more substantial than simply sending rescuers to a course. Its personnel shared an operating system already used during beach sightings while working with other participants on common standards covering risk reduction, wildlife conservation and emergency response.

Nelly Gabriela Herrera Ornelas, head of Semarnat’s Jalisco office, said the first phase centers on the hotel industry because hotel employees maintain daily contact with guests, workers and people using beaches, estuaries and other coastal areas. The instruction covers identifying dangerous situations, preventing close contact, responding when an animal is reported and communicating clearly during a sighting.

That hotel focus follows a series of measures adopted around Marina Vallarta after a fatal crocodile attack near an estuary in June. Hotels in the district subsequently added daytime beach patrols and strengthened guest warnings.

Jalisco also announced in July that real-time crocodile notices would be added to the Jalisco Alerta system, adding mobile notifications to the flags, lifeguard instructions and social media updates already used along the city’s beaches.

Recent restrictions show how the local warning system operates. Puerto Vallarta reported red and purple flags at five monitored beach areas on August 13, including Marina beaches and river mouths. A purple flag identifies dangerous wildlife, while a red flag bars entry into the water. Lifeguard instructions and location-specific notices define the section covered by each restriction.

The coastal course also examined why crocodiles appear in ordinary beach settings. The animals move between rivers, estuaries, lagoons, wetlands and the sea. Researchers participating in the program said urban and tourism development has reduced habitat surrounding those routes, increasing the chance that people and crocodiles will occupy the same edges of the water.

The discussion included recent crocodile deaths across Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas, placing wildlife protection alongside beach safety. Participants warned against feeding, approaching, cornering or attempting to capture an animal.

Organizers plan to extend the protocols developed during the training to neighborhoods, villas, condominiums and other coastal communities. Anyone who sees a crocodile should move away, keep other people clear, notify the nearest lifeguard or emergency services, and follow any beach restriction in place.
