Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, August 27, 2026 – Gunfire struck a tire on a family’s Chevrolet as it arrived from Guadalajara on Wednesday, triggering a police and military search that stretched from the Las Juntas toll-road entrance to the Ameca bridge and into Bahía de Banderas. The family reached officers near Puerto Vallarta International Airport without injuries.
The first emergency report was logged around 1 p.m. near Las Juntas, where the Guadalajara-Puerto Vallarta toll road meets the city’s northern highway corridor. Municipal police and the Mexican Army mobilized after calls about shots and possible attempts to seize vehicles. Officers later located a blue Chevrolet near the airport with bullet damage to one tire.
Published accounts placed parts of the episode in different locations. Azteca Jalisco described a Guadalajara family traveling near the airport when another vehicle approached and shots were fired at its vehicle. NotiEspacio said the occupants stayed inside, kept moving, and called 911 until they met officers near the airport. Reporte Diario placed armed men at the toll-road entrance, where it said they tried to stop two vehicles before fleeing up the toll highway.
NoticiasPV added a later report near the Ameca bridge and said the search expanded across the Jalisco-Nayarit line after a possible escape toward Bahía de Banderas. That account also said soldiers patrolled the toll road and Boulevard Riviera Nayarit while municipal agencies coordinated on both sides of the Ameca River.
A comparison of the reports separates the locations into different stages of the response. Las Juntas was the first reported area, the airport was where the damaged vehicle stopped, and the Ameca bridge entered the operation through a later alert and the search toward Nayarit.
Those points sit along a compact but strategically important gateway. Highway 200 carries traffic between the airport and Bahía de Banderas, the toll road delivers vehicles from Guadalajara into Las Juntas, and the Ameca bridge crosses the state line. The route moves through municipal, state and federal jurisdictions, explaining the involvement of police in two municipalities alongside federal forces.
That response unfolded less than four weeks after Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus said the city’s first vehicle-identification arch was operating between the airport and Las Juntas. Milenio reported that the state also promised more joint patrols involving municipal and state police, the National Guard and the Army. No detention had been announced when Wednesday’s local reports closed.
PVDN’s July safety assessment had identified that same arch as a measure whose value would depend on documented operating results. Wednesday’s search took place along the precise corridor where the equipment is operating.
The shooting followed a separate cluster of crimes in Las Juntas. On August 6, PVDN reported that merchants had requested additional patrols after armed robberies at businesses along Highway 200. Wednesday’s gunfire involved moving traffic rather than a storefront, but it placed another armed report on the same northern corridor.
