Puebla, Mexico – Local health authorities have issued a public health alert as the State of Puebla experiences a significant uptick in respiratory ailments following recent ash fall from the Popocatépetl volcano. The increase in particulate matter in the air has led to a surge in allergic rhinitis cases, characterized by symptoms including nasal discharge, itchy nostrils, and watery eyes, among others.
The volcanic ash, composed of fine rock fragments, minerals, and glass, poses a considerable health risk, particularly to individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions. According to Cesar Mejía, the Emergency Service Coordinator for the Red Cross of Puebla, there has been a 25 to 30% increase in reported cases of rhinitis attributed directly to the volcanic debris.
To mitigate the adverse effects, Mejía recommends that individuals clean their nostrils with saline solution to alleviate discomfort. The National Center for Disaster Prevention (Cenapred) also highlights the dangers of frequent exposure to volcanic ash, which can lead to acute eye and respiratory tract irritation, irritative conjunctivitis, and even corneal abrasions.
More severe health impacts include gastrointestinal issues, respiratory exhaustion, an increase in mucus secretion, and the potential development of obstructive pulmonary diseases. In response to these risks, Cenapred advises the public to use masks or wet handkerchiefs to cover their noses and mouths, rinse their eyes and throats with clean water, and remain indoors when possible.
Special precautions are recommended for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly, including avoiding contact with volcanic dust and ensuring water tanks are securely covered to prevent ash contamination.
As of the latest updates, the Popocatépetl volcano remains at a Yellow Phase 2 alert level. While there is a continuous emission of water vapor and moderate volcanic ash, the prevailing winds are expected to direct the ash plume northeast, away from the Mexico City Metropolitan Area (CDMX). Residents are urged to stay informed and adhere to safety guidelines as the situation develops.
