Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, July 20, 2026 — Waves could reach 2.5 meters along Puerto Vallarta’s coast Monday, creating rougher conditions around exposed beaches, rocky points, river mouths, docks and small vessels as Mexico’s summer travel period begins.
A late Sunday forecast placed temperatures between 26°C and 33°C, with wind gusts near 40 km/h. The 2.5-meter figure is a forecast ceiling across the coastal area, not a measured breaker height at every city beach.
Surf inside Bahía de Banderas can vary sharply by beach orientation, tide, wind and the protection offered by the bay. One stretch may look manageable while another develops stronger shore break or currents. Calm intervals can also be followed by larger wave sets, which can catch swimmers and people standing near rocks or seawalls off guard.
The elevated-surf signal matters even when the sky looks usable. People walking near the Malecón seawall, rocky access points, jetties and narrow beach entrances should leave extra distance between themselves and breaking water. Wet rocks and concrete edges can become dangerous before waves appear large from a distance.
Boat crews, fishing operators, paddleboarders and excursion companies also face changing conditions outside protected sections of the bay. The Secretariat of the Navy wave model provides regional guidance, while captains and harbor users should follow any instructions issued by maritime authorities before departure.
The marine forecast does not automatically close the port or place every beach under a red flag. Beach access is governed by local flag conditions and lifeguard instructions. A red flag means no swimming, while yellow signals caution. At Los Muertos, Camarones, Playa de Oro, Olas Altas, Conchas Chinas and Palmares, the flag posted at the time of arrival should take precedence over a general forecast. Conditions can change through the day as wind increases or storms develop nearby.
River mouths need separate caution. The Cuale and Pitillal outlets can carry runoff, debris, and shifting currents after rain in the surrounding hills. Swimming close to an outlet is a poor choice when surf is elevated, even when another section of the beach remains open.
Monday’s warning continues a pattern seen several times this month. An SMN bulletin issued July 8 anticipated waves between 1.5 and 2.5 meters along Jalisco’s coast. PVDN also covered another high-surf forecast at the start of July. The repeated advisories do not mean conditions are identical each day, but they show elevated swell has returned regularly during the rainy season.
Mexico’s summer travel period runs from July 20 through August 30, increasing beach activity during weeks when surf, thunderstorms and runoff can change conditions quickly.
Anyone planning beach or marine activities on Monday should check the flag upon arrival, speak with lifeguards before entering, keep children away from the strong shore break, and avoid climbing onto wet rocks or seawalls.
