Preschoolers in Los Cabos learn to stay safe

A preschool in San José del Cabo is doing something simple and powerful: teaching little kids how to spot danger and what to do if fire is nearby. Colegio Mission just adopted Aprende a Mantenerte Seguro (Learn to Stay Safe), a firefighter-backed curriculum that’s spreading across Mexico. It’s the first school in the municipal seat to use it, and the lessons are designed for tiny attention spans and real-world risks at home. Teachers and the local fire department will run activities throughout the school year to turn safety into a habit.

A preschool in the municipal seat has become the first to adopt a national fire-prevention program designed for the youngest students. Colegio Mission will run the Aprende a Mantenerte Seguro curriculum this school year with support from the San José del Cabo Fire Department. The lessons focus on everyday risks—hot stoves, electrical outlets, lighters—and simple actions kids can remember. The goal is practical: fewer burns, safer homes, calmer reactions in an emergency.

The program isn’t a one-off talk. It’s a set of short activities and drills that fit preschool routines. Firefighters and teachers coordinate classroom visits, practice calling for help, and explain what heat sources look like from a child’s eye level. City officials say Colegio Mission is the first school in San José del Cabo’s municipal seat to put the model into practice, a small but symbolic lead for others to follow.

Learn to Stay Safe

Mexico’s fire-protection community has been rolling out this approach nationwide, with materials adapted for preschool and early primary grades. The curriculum covers home hazards, the “fire triangle,” and what to do in case clothes catch fire—stop, drop, and roll—delivered in plain language and repeated until it sticks. In Los Cabos, firefighters presented the project to local preschool educators earlier this year to encourage classroom adoption.

Behind the scenes, the effort links to broader work by Mexico’s fire-safety associations to standardize early-childhood prevention training. AMRACI and allied groups describe Aprende a Mantenerte Seguro as a toolset for teachers and families, not a one-day event, with a stated aim of reaching tens of thousands of children across multiple states. That framing helps explain why Los Cabos has treated it as a long-term prevention push, not a publicity drive.

What changes for families

For parents, the shift is subtle and immediate. Kids come home naming hot objects, pointing out “no-touch” zones in the kitchen, and practicing emergency numbers. Teachers say children learn fastest when firefighters visit and turn drills into games. Independent coverage last year highlighted how the model grew from early pilots, including in Los Cabos, into a national push with disability-inclusive materials and guidance on safe use of gas and electricity.

Colegio Mission’s adoption matters because it normalizes safety lessons at an age when habits form quickly. This is the window to teach that matches and lighters are tools, not toys; that hot pans are off-limits; that you don’t hide during a fire. Local firefighters have invited more schools to sign up, and officials have circulated a prevention contact for interested campuses. In practical terms, that means more classrooms doing tiny, repeated drills that add up to fewer tragedies at home.
