Los Cabos dengue fumigation

Los Cabos dengue fumigation begins Friday across the cape

Fumigation trucks will start rolling through Los Cabos this week, first in San José del Cabo and then in Cabo San Lucas. Officials say the goal is to knock down adult mosquitoes fast after recent rains, but they’re also blunt about limits: spraying doesn’t touch larvae. The ask is simple: open doors and windows when the units pass, and eliminate water sources where mosquitoes breed. The schedule runs through October 10. What follows is what to expect, where it begins, and why your home prep still matters.

Fumigation begins today, September 19, in San José del Cabo and continues there through September 28. Crews then shift to Cabo San Lucas from September 29 to October 10. The state health department is asking residents to open doors and windows as vehicles pass so the spray reaches indoor spaces.

The first sweep includes neighborhoods such as Santa Anita, Costa Dorada, Villa Bonita, Vivah Veredas, and Buenos Aires. Officials stress that fumigation kills adult mosquitoes but not larvae, so cutting breeding sites at home remains essential.

Spraying follows September rains that leave plenty of small pools where Aedes aegypti thrives. The health department says the operation uses vehicular fogging and works best when homes are open to let the mist penetrate. It’s a quick pass, but it drops the adult population that’s most likely to bite and transmit dengue.

Authorities are pairing the spray cycle with a familiar message: wash and cover water containers—tinacos, barrels, buckets, and cisterns—and toss or flip anything that can hold rainwater, from tires to bottles and caps. That’s how you cut larvae and stop the next generation.

Recent numbers help explain the push. By mid-August, Baja California Sur had 87 confirmed dengue cases in 2025, according to local reporting based on federal surveillance data. Regionally, the Americas recorded about 3.74 million suspected cases by epidemiological week 34, lower than the same period in 2024 but still high enough to keep pressure on local systems.

Keep doors open and kill the breeding sites at home

The spray can only do so much if larvae keep hatching. That’s why the state repeats the same request each cycle: open up when the foggers arrive, then stay focused on your own patios, rooftops, and storage areas where clean water sits. Basic housekeeping—washing and covering containers, draining puddles after storms, and clearing junk that catches water—does more to break transmission than any single truck pass.

Los Cabos is also testing longer-term tools. Earlier this season, local authorities highlighted the Wolbachia method—releasing mosquitoes carrying a bacteria that weakens dengue transmission—as part of broader control efforts in the municipality. It’s not a quick fix, but paired with community cleanup and periodic sprays, it can bend the curve.

For now, the schedule is set through October 10. If you live along the first routes in San José del Cabo, expect passes over the next ten days; Cabo San Lucas follows right after. The state health department posts the complete calendar, which will be updated as crews move across neighborhoods. Keep an ear out for the foggers, prop open those doors, and treat standing water like an urgent chore. It all counts.
