As part of a sustainability initiative, the Hilton Cancun Mar Caribe All-Inclusive Resort has installed a dedicated “bee hotel” – essentially an on-site sanctuary – for these stingless, honey-producing bees. The goal is twofold: to help conserve an important local species and to give guests a hands-on lesson in environmental stewardship.

“We know that caring for nature is fundamental, and the melipona bee is a crucial part of the region’s ecosystem,” explained Maricarmen Gutiérrez, the resort’s sales director, at the project’s unveiling. “This is a hotel for bees inside a hotel for humans,” she noted, underscoring the unique concept. Melipona bees have been cultivated since Mayan times and were considered sacred for their medicinal honey. Unlike more common bees, they have no stinger, making them ideal ambassadors to educate people about the importance of pollinators.
The hotel’s sustainability manager spearheaded the melipona project about two months ago. They introduced a colony of meliponas to specially built wooden hives tucked in a quiet, gardened area of the resort. Resort staff have been trained on how to care for the bees, keep the hives healthy, and safely harvest honey. The plan is to eventually use the honey these bees produce for on-site guest experiences – from tastings to incorporating it into spa treatments or cocktails – showcasing a truly local product.
For now, the focus is on ensuring the buzzing newcomers feel at home. Employees across departments are learning about melipona behavior and habitat needs so they can help the hives thrive. Once the internal training is complete, the resort will start welcoming guests into the world of the melipona bee. Hilton Cancun has already begun offering sneak-peek visits for some tour groups, and soon every guest will have a chance to observe the bees up close as part of the resort’s eco-activities.
