Mérida opened a new sports canopy at Parque Cuauhtémoc in the Mercedes Barrera neighborhood, completing a public works project priced at nearly 2.95 million pesos.
The work covers a public court in southern Mérida. It adds a metal roof, lighting, seating, and other small upgrades to a space used for sports and recreation. The city placed the project under Mérida Enchula, a wider program for parks, courts, and shared public spaces.
A project chosen through neighborhood voting
Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada said the project came from local participation.
“Mérida deserves the best, and the families in this neighborhood now have a safer and much more functional space to spend time together, play, and enjoy themselves as a community. And most importantly, this project was born from your ideas,” Patrón said during the delivery.
The project was selected through Diseña tu Ciudad 2025, the city’s participatory-budgeting program. The court is at Calle 115 No. 600 by 54-A in Mercedes Barrera. It placed second in District 6, according to municipal bulletin details republished Friday.
City information listed the investment at 2,946,254.03 pesos. The work included a metal canopy over the multipurpose court, a bench, tree pruning and removal work, concrete bollards, and lighting for the basketball court.
The publicly available inauguration details did not identify a contractor, a contract number, a warranty period, or a maintenance schedule. Those gaps are worth noting because neighborhood infrastructure needs care after the ribbon-cutting ends.
Patrón also tied the work to municipal finances.
“These works are thanks to the people’s resources; today the city is improving without debt and without tax increases,” she said.
Part of a larger public-space push
Mérida Enchula was presented earlier this week as a 350 million peso public-space program. The plan covers more than 800 spaces in 263 neighborhoods and subdivisions, plus the municipality’s 47 comisarías. The city has described it as its largest public-space recovery program in two decades.
The program includes park rehabilitation, sports spaces, lighting, maintenance, and new equipment. Municipal accounts also list a goal of installing 80,000 LED lights. City officials also expect to deliver 18 projects tied to the 2026 participatory budget.
Parque Cuauhtémoc is one small piece of that larger plan. It also fits a local governing pattern that has become more visible in Mérida this year. Neighborhood works are being tied to voting, public-space recovery, and quality-of-life claims. The city is also facing pressure from growth, heat, mobility needs, and uneven access to services.
A related Mérida participatory-budget project in Chichí Suárez opened after local voting. The latest canopy project follows the same public logic. This one has a narrower focus on sports and recreation.
A covered court can extend the use of a park in Mérida’s heat, especially when the lighting works, and the space stays clean. The city has not publicly detailed what maintenance plan will follow the Mercedes Barrera project.
