Mérida’s summer tourism push is being moved up after Yucatán changed the school calendar and set an earlier end to classes. The shift has affected timing for hotels, travel businesses, and city promotion plans. The new strategy is aimed at families, visitors moving between Cancún and Mérida, and foreign travelers using direct air connections. The city is also keeping a separate World Cup-related campaign in place as officials prepare for a summer season with different booking patterns.
Calendar change pushes tourism plans forward
Mérida’s hotel and tourism sector is adjusting its summer promotion strategy after Yucatán moved up the end of the 2025-2026 school year.
State education officials announced that classes would conclude on June 5. The administrative close was set for June 12, with the next school cycle scheduled to begin on August 31.
The change affects a travel period that many families use for vacations. City tourism officials and hotel representatives are now preparing an earlier campaign to keep Mérida visible as travel plans shift.
Families become the main target
The updated campaign is focused on family travelers who move by car, plane, or bus. Tourism officials are also looking at visitors who combine Cancún and Mérida in the same trip.
Cancún remains important because of its role as a major entry point for foreign visitors to the southeast. Mérida officials are also considering a promotion tied to air connections to cities such as Miami, Houston, and Toronto.
The city plans to reinforce promotion in Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Mexico City. Additional efforts are expected in Central and South America, along with digital promotion targeting European travelers.
World Cup campaign continues separately
The summer campaign is separate from Mérida entre Gol y Gol, the city’s World Cup-related tourism effort.
Mérida is not a host city for the 2026 World Cup. The local strategy aims to position the city as an add-on destination for travelers already traveling through Mexico during the tournament.
Officials have also discussed travel-platform agreements tied to the Visit Mérida brand. The goal is to place packages in front of travelers while vacation timing, school calendars, and World Cup travel plans are still being sorted.
