The operations director, Diego Díaz Hernández, acknowledged a reality locals know well. Sargassum does influence the program’s annual evaluations. Yet he drew a clear line: Blue Flag does not score the seaweed itself. The standard hinges on water quality and related criteria, not the presence of seasonal algae on the shore.
What the renewals mean for residents and visitors

Playa del Carmen maintained the quality of its waters, he said, and that secured the renewals. That distinction helps explain why a beach can earn certification even during a seaweed season.
How the program evaluates beaches
The operations director noted that Blue Flag has kept the same evaluation list for the past two years. The organization continues to refine how it conducts audits across certified bathing areas.
