National Emergency Drill

Cancún businesses gear up for National Emergency Drill

Cancún won’t just pause for a siren test. This Friday, Sept. 19 at 1 pm local time, city hall staff, shoppers at Plaza Las Américas, and crews at the C5 complex will run real evacuations while phones across the city light up with a nationwide test alert. Officials say 769 companies are taking part—far more than last year—aiming to turn a yearly ritual into muscle memory. Here’s what will happen, why the alerts matter, and the exact time you’ll hear them.

Mexico will stage its National Emergency Drill this Friday, Sept. 19, with Cancún joining in force. Local civil-protection chief Antonio Riveroll Ribbón says 769 companies have signed up—well above 2024 levels—and city crews will lead evacuations at Plaza Las Américas, the Municipal Palace, and the C5 security complex. The drill marks 40 years since the 1985 Mexico City earthquake and eight years since 2017, and it aims to turn preparedness into a habit.

Nationwide, the exercise is set for 12:00 pm (Central Time). Quintana Roo runs on UTC-5 all year, so the drill cues at 1:00 pm in Cancún. Expect a coordinated test across public buildings and private workplaces, with supervisors timing evacuations and checking routes and regroup points.

National Emergency Drill for Cancún

Cancún doesn’t face substantial quake risk like central Mexico, so local scenarios lean on the threats we actually live with—fire, crowd flow, and hurricane preparedness. That’s why the city will stage evacuations in a government building, a busy mall, and the C5 hub. It’s the same logic officials applied in April’s first national drill of the year, when Benito Juárez tested a fire hypothesis and refined procedures for hotels and retail.

The headline change this September is what you’ll feel in your pocket. For the first time during the September drill, authorities will push a wireless alert to cell phones across the country—no app or data needed—alongside the usual loudspeakers and media messages. The on-screen text will clearly say “ESTO ES UN SIMULACRO.” Keep your phone on, with signal, and don’t panic when it sounds. That’s the point: to rehearse calmly so the real thing never catches us flat-footed.

If you’re downtown at the hour, you may see municipal workers empty the Palacio and shoppers being guided out of Plaza Las Américas. Staff will count heads, log exit times, and note bottlenecks. At C5, teams will run their own timing drills and communications checks. The city expects more companies to join as the date hits, but participation has already topped last year’s tally by a wide margin.

When it happens and how to be ready

Set your watch right: 12:00 pm in Mexico City, 1:00 pm in Cancún. If you’re at work, follow your building captain, avoid elevators, and head to the designated meeting point. If you’re at home, use the alert to walk your family plan—safe zones, exits, and a spot to reunite. The idea is simple: repeat the steps now so they’re second nature when it counts. Official guidance and registration live on the federal preparedness portal; local authorities mirror those protocols in the city.

Cancún has run these rehearsals for years, but this one marries old-school drills with a modern cell-broadcast alert. It’s a slight interruption for a bigger payoff: fewer seconds wasted, more lives protected.
