A woman collecting recyclable materials heard a faint cry before finding the newborn in a trash container in Cancun’s Paraíso Maya area. Emergency crews responded before the baby was taken to the General Hospital, “Jesús Kumate Rodríguez.” The child was reported stable, but doctors kept the infant under close neonatal observation. Authorities have opened an investigation, and the case now turns on how the baby came to be abandoned in a clandestine dumping area before help arrived.
Newborn rescued alive in Cancun
A newborn baby was found alive early Monday in a trash container in Cancun’s Paraíso Maya area, according to initial reports from authorities and local responders.
The baby was located in a container in a site described as a clandestine dumping area in Supermanzana 107. A woman collecting recyclable materials reportedly heard a faint cry while searching through the trash.
She found the newborn among the waste and requested emergency help.
Municipal police, paramedics, Protección Civil personnel, and members of GEAVIG, the specialized unit for family and gender violence cases, responded to the scene. The infant received initial medical assistance before being taken to the General Hospital “Jesús Kumate Rodríguez.”
Baby placed under medical observation
Authorities said the newborn was reported stable after arriving at the hospital. Medical personnel kept the baby under observation in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit because of the conditions in which the child was found.
Reports said the baby had been born less than 24 hours earlier. The child was also reported to have arrived without having been fed.
The DIF Municipal is expected to keep the newborn under its protection while the case remains under investigation.
Investigation opened into abandonment
The Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of the abandonment and locate the mother.
Authorities had not publicly identified the mother or reported a motive as of Monday afternoon. The investigation focuses on how the baby ended up in the trash container and who was responsible.
The case prompted an emergency response in the Paraíso Maya area, where officials said protection protocols were activated upon receipt of the report.
