Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, August 31, 2026 – A passenger remained unaccounted after falling from a tourist boat near the Puerto Vallarta maritime terminal Sunday night, prompting a search by municipal rescue divers, naval personnel and the Harbor Master’s Office.
The person disappeared while the vessel was moving near the docks after a tour of Banderas Bay. No recovery had been publicly confirmed by early Monday.
Municipal lifeguards searched from the water while other emergency personnel walked the docks and surrounding port areas. Navy and Harbor Master’s Office personnel joined the operation using small boats, diving teams and surface searches, according to reporting from Tribuna de la Bahía.
Several important details remained unresolved Monday morning.
Early local reports conflict over the age and identity of the missing passenger. Tribuna de la Bahía referred to the person as a minor, while NoticiasPV and Quadratín Jalisco described a male tourist believed to be from Monterrey, Nuevo León. No authority had publicly released a name or confirmed the person’s age.
NoticiasPV also reported that a second person entered the water in an attempt to help, then returned safely. That account had not been confirmed in an official statement.
The reports also differ slightly on the vessel’s movement. One account said it was approaching the docks, another said it had begun moving within the port, and the original report said docking and passenger disembarkation were underway. The vessel’s name, operator, and exact location of the fall had not been disclosed.
The incident occurred within the federal port complex near Puerto Mágico rather than along an open beach. The Puerto Vallarta maritime terminal handles local tour boats alongside its cruise infrastructure, placing the response under overlapping municipal and federal maritime authority. Puerto Vallarta also has a Navy search and rescue station operating within Mexico’s national maritime rescue system.
No public report indicated whether the passenger was wearing a life jacket, what caused the fall, whether port surveillance cameras recorded the incident or whether the search resumed at daylight Monday. No broader closure or interruption to port operations had been announced.
Sunday’s disappearance follows a separate fatal tourist-boat accident near Los Tules in July, when a woman died after a small vessel overturned while approaching shore. Authorities have not suggested any connection between the two incidents, and the circumstances appear different.
