Authorities in Playa del Carmen seized about 150 kilograms of suspected marijuana on December 7. The drug was hidden inside three heavy boxes at a logistics center in the Villas del Sol housing development. The shipment was moving through a parcel company when officers stepped in. They stopped a route that began in Michoacán and was headed for the island of Cozumel.
According to the official report, investigators from the state prosecutor’s office were carrying out an operation focused on street-level drug dealing. They entered the area around the logistics hub near Avenida Loros, Avenida CTM and Avenida Colosio. During that patrol, they noticed three large cardboard boxes wrapped in tape and plastic. The boxes felt unusually heavy and gave off a strong, familiar smell.
When agents opened the packages, they found a dry green plant with characteristics of marijuana. Each box weighed about 50 kilograms, for a total load of roughly 150 kilograms. The shipment appeared ready to cross the Caribbean corridor between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel. Officers secured the suspected drug on site and removed the boxes from the facility.

Investigators later confirmed that the parcel labels listed a sender in the port city of Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán. The recipient was in Cozumel. The finding suggests that the shipment moved through commercial logistics links between the Pacific coast and the Riviera Maya. After the seizure, the boxes and their contents were turned over to the public prosecutor. Specialists will weigh and analyze the material to confirm its composition and exact quantity.
Authorities have not announced any arrests related to this shipment so far. They continue to treat it as part of a wider investigation into drug distribution in the municipality of Solidaridad. Officials say the operation was carried out by agents assigned to the office that focuses on street-level drug crimes. They worked together with members of the army, the National Guard and the local municipal police. Coordinated deployments of that kind have become more frequent in recent months. State authorities say they are trying to keep drugs away from tourist zones and densely populated neighborhoods.
Villas del Sol is a sprawling residential area on the northwestern side of Playa del Carmen. Security officials describe it as a priority zone because of repeated crime reports. In June, for example, police detained a man there who was allegedly carrying small packets of marijuana. The arrest happened during a patrol that targeted retail drug sales in the neighborhood. Those smaller arrests form one front of the strategy. Large seizures like Sunday’s are meant to hit the supply chain that feeds the street market.
The investigation into the logistics center haul now aims to trace the people behind the labels. Prosecutors will review shipping documents, video from the facility and any identification used to send or receive the boxes. This is not the first time parcel businesses in Playa del Carmen have been used to move suspected drugs. In October, a police team supported by a trained canine unit found several suspicious packages during an inspection at another parcel warehouse near Villas del Sol. The operation began after officers received an anonymous tip. Those packages were also taken into custody for forensic analysis.
The maritime route between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel has drawn attention from security forces before. In late 2023, naval personnel reported seizing several bundles of possible marijuana on beaches near the Playacar resort area. Another bundle was found on the eastern coast of Cozumel. Those actions highlighted how the narrow channel between the mainland and the island can be exploited for drug runs.
Taken together, those cases show how criminal groups may try to hide illicit shipments among thousands of legitimate parcels. They also blend them into routine crossings between the mainland and nearby islands. For residents of Playa del Carmen, the latest seizure is another reminder that major drug movements do not always happen far from home. They can surface in familiar neighborhoods, on busy streets, and inside ordinary-looking businesses.
