PUERTO VALLARTA, Jalisco, Sept. 17, 2026 — Municipal police detained three young men early Wednesday after officers said the group sprayed fire-extinguisher powder at pedestrians and vehicles on Calle Juárez in Centro.
A motorcycle collided with a Sitio 27 taxi during the ensuing pursuit at Avenida Francisco Villa and Río Potomac, according to the police account.
The detained men, ages 21, 18, and 18, were referred to the appropriate authority. Traffic officers took over the crash and damage investigation.
Pedestrians and drivers faced immediate risks
The incident created two hazards for residents and late-night drivers: direct exposure to extinguisher powder and a police pursuit that ended in a collision.
The reports do not identify the type of extinguisher involved. However, common dry-chemical extinguisher powders can irritate the eyes, skin, nose, throat, and lungs, according to Poison Control.
Close-range exposure can cause coughing or shortness of breath. The reviewed reports did not indicate whether any pedestrian, driver, or suspect required medical treatment.
The pursuit also extended beyond downtown. Police reported activity at Francisco Villa and Río Potomac, Avenida Fluvial and Los Tules, and near Plaza El Pitillal.
Social media posts triggered the response
At about 3:20 a.m., the municipal police’s Unidad de Análisis alerted officers to social media posts that allegedly announced plans to cause disturbances following Puerto Vallarta’s Independence Day celebrations.
Police said the posts showed men dressed as clowns riding motorcycles. Other videos allegedly showed members of the group taking firefighting equipment from a gasoline station.
Officers later located three men on motorcycles along Calle Juárez, according to the police account. Authorities alleged that the men were spraying extinguisher powder at people and passing vehicles.
The reported use of social media monitoring adds context to PVDN’s earlier coverage of expanded police patrols in Puerto Vallarta crime hot spots.
Pursuit moved beyond downtown
Police said the men attempted to flee when officers approached them.
During the pursuit, a black Honda XR motorcycle without license plates struck taxi 1696 from Sitio 27 at Francisco Villa and Río Potomac.
Police reported detentions at several locations. One followed the collision, while the other two occurred near Avenida Fluvial and Los Tules and near Plaza El Pitillal.
A report that published photographs from the scene said officers seized an extinguisher and a motorcycle.
The police account identified the detained men as residents of La Bobadilla, Rincón del Cielo and Coapinole. Municipal traffic officers remained responsible for determining liability for the collision and resulting vehicle damage.
All three men were transferred to the appropriate authority for a determination of their legal status. PVDN is using their ages rather than the names published elsewhere because the reports describe police allegations and no court finding. Authorities did not provide any evidence that the men were dressed as clowns in the photos released, but made the accusation in their official report.
