The outage comes amid weeks of complaints about unstable service citywide. On Tuesday evening, Plaza Las Américas and adjoining neighborhoods also lost power, disrupting restaurants and shops as CFE brigades moved in to repair a separate fault near Avenida 125.
By early Wednesday, local outlets tallied multiple transformer “explosions” tied to overloads. Reported affected zones ranged from the Ejido to sections of Fifth Avenue and, again, Villas del Sol’s fourth and fifth parks. Authorities reported no injuries, but neighbors were urged to unplug sensitive equipment while the voltage stabilized.
What CFE says is behind the pattern
CFE has argued this summer that recurring cuts in Villas del Sol stem from external damage and stressed infrastructure, not a shortage of generation in Playa del Carmen. In June, the utility’s Riviera Maya superintendent cited pole crashes and fires near exposed lines, while noting a new substation and circuit consolidation plan for the area.
The broader state grid has also been under pressure. In March, rotating outages hit seven Quintana Roo municipalities—including Playa del Carmen—after humidity in a gas pipeline forced plants to switch fuels, a reminder that local failures often intersect with regional constraints.
