Puerto Vallarta beaches given green light for recreational use but warns not to consume shellfish from the Bay

Puerto Vallarta (PVDN) – The beaches and water quality of the Bay of Banderas in Puerto Vallarta are at optimal levels for recreational use, according to the head of the eighth health region of the Jalisco Health Secretariat, Jaime Álvarez Zayas.

The announcement comes a few days before the second long holiday weekend of 2023, and a few weeks before the start of the Holy Week and Easter holiday period.

“The quality of water for recreational use is within national standards, we are ready to receive all bathers on the beaches with great safety,” he stressed.

Due to the algal blooms that have occurred this year, the Jalisco Health Secretariat issued alerts and requested people not to extract or consume oysters or clams to avoid any affectation.

“In a preventive way, we always do prevention and we decided that people should not extract or consume bivalve mollusc from the Bay due to health conditions (…) it started 10 days ago,” he explained.

Álvarez Zayas issued some preventive recommendations, such as: “If you are going to buy shellfish that are fresh, that they have the conditions of freshness, if you perceive a bad smell or some characteristic that shows that it is not fresh, avoid not buying it…

If they are going to consume it, it must be well cooked, but these toxins are thermostable, meaning cooking may not deactivate harmful bacteria, so if you are not sure that the products are fresh, avoid consuming them to avoid any disease,” he pointed out.
