Puerto Vallarta, Mexico — Puerto Vallarta is preparing for a surge in tourism as projections indicate the arrival of 7 million air passengers during the upcoming high season, according to the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Trust (Fidetur). This anticipated figure marks a notable increase from the 6.7 million air visitors recorded in 2023.
Luis Villaseñor Nolasco, Director of the Public Trust for the Promotion and Advertising of Tourism in Puerto Vallarta, attributes the expected growth to an increase in international flights and the deployment of larger aircraft by airlines servicing the region. “Many airlines are already operating with larger aircraft—previously with 189 seats, and now some flights are using Airbus models with 220 seats,” he explained. “They’re increasing capacity, which allows us to bring in a greater number of tourists.”
Wholesalers and travel agencies share high expectations for the season, especially with the onset of colder weather in countries like Canada. “We expect the first snowfall in Canada will trigger an influx of ‘snowbirds’—those winter visitors seeking warmer climates,” Villaseñor Nolasco added.
The economic impact of the increased tourism is also expected to be significant. Fidetur projects a rise in economic activity between 7% and 10% compared to last year. The boost is anticipated not only from the higher number of visitors but also from increased spending per tourist.
With the high season on the horizon, local businesses and the hospitality sector are gearing up to accommodate the influx. The enhanced flight options and optimistic projections have positioned Puerto Vallarta for what could be a record-breaking winter season.
