Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, August 9, 2026 – Puerto Vallarta is participating in Mexico’s National Reforestation Day on Sunday after a two-day municipal tree giveaway moved part of the nationwide campaign into local homes and neighborhoods.
The Environmental Sustainability Directorate distributed one tree to each person who visited its offices at Cañada 100, at the corner of La Montaña, in the Campo Verde neighborhood. Trees were available Friday, August 7, and Saturday, August 8. The final announced pickup window ran from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
Residents were invited to plant the trees at home or elsewhere in their neighborhoods. That gave Puerto Vallarta a household-scale role within an operation largely built around coordinated planting across rural land, protected areas and restoration sites.
Federal organizers said more than 235,000 people were expected to plant 6.6 million trees and plants on August 9. Activity was planned across 32,184 hectares in 621 municipalities and 1,632 agrarian communities spanning all 32 states.
The national schedule includes temperate and cloud forests, wet and dry tropical forests, scrubland, grassland and mangroves. Work also reaches 37 protected natural areas and 17 sites voluntarily dedicated to conservation.
People who collected a local seedling still need to match it to the planting space. The city’s urban tree guidance identifies native or naturalized options suited to the region. It also cautions anyone planting beside a sidewalk to consider overhead cables, buried pipes, water meters, or access covers before digging.
Puerto Vallarta’s distribution focused on neighborhood and household planting. A separate Jalisco nursery program has assigned 60,000 native pine seedlings mainly to the Tapalpa plateau, the La Primavera protected area, and the Sierra de Quila. The two efforts show how planting location determines which trees belong in a restoration project.
Federal officials said the August 9 campaign is intended to become an annual national event. In Puerto Vallarta, the announced tree pickup ended Saturday, leaving planting and early care with each recipient.
