Puerto Vallarta has put public funding behind Diversity Week, a new summer event planned for the Zona Romántica. The approved support brings city money, state backing, and municipal logistics into one of the city’s most visible tourism districts. The vote also comes as Vallarta continues to lean into its identity as Mexico’s best-known LGBTQ+ beach destination, while local officials frame the event as a package of culture, business, and inclusion.
Puerto Vallarta funds Diversity Week in Zona Romántica
Puerto Vallarta City Council approved up to 1 million pesos in municipal funding for Diversity Week 2026, a three-day event planned for the Zona Romántica from July 30 to August 1.
The vote puts city money behind an event aimed at reinforcing Puerto Vallarta’s LGBTQ+ tourism profile in the same neighborhood that anchors much of the city’s nightlife, restaurant, hotel, and beach economy. The approved agreement also brings in state support through the Jalisco State Entertainment Agency, which is expected to contribute up to 7 million pesos.
The total event budget would amount to 8 million pesos, according to the council’s proposal. City funds would cover part of the event, while the state-backed portion would go toward production, stage infrastructure, artistic talent, logistics, technical needs, and operations.
The measure passed with 13 votes in favor and one abstention. Councilor Luis Jesús Escoto Martínez presented the proposal during the ordinary City Council session. The city’s municipal transparency portal listed the June 5 session, although the final agreement document had not appeared in the listing at the time of checking.
A city event tied to tourism and identity
Escoto described Diversity Week as a “strategic opportunity” to strengthen Puerto Vallarta’s national and international projection as an inclusive, diverse, safe destination that promotes equality.
Puerto Vallarta has spent years building a brand around LGBTQ+ travel, especially in the Zona Romántica and Playa de los Muertos area.
Jalisco’s tourism promotion around Vallarta Pride 2026 already leaned heavily on that identity, presenting the May celebration as a major Pride event rooted in the Romantic Zone and tied to the theme “The New Era, A Very Mexican Pride.”
Diversity Week would arrive two months later, during a slower summer stretch compared with winter and spring. That timing is part of the story. A publicly supported event in late July can help fill hotel rooms, restaurant tables, bars, beach clubs, and performance venues at a time when the city usually works harder for foot traffic.
What the city is putting behind the event
The municipal contribution is not limited to cash. Under the agreement, Puerto Vallarta would also provide operational support from several departments.
That includes Public Security, Traffic, Civil Protection, Firefighters, Medical Services, and other municipal areas tied to event logistics. Those departments are usually the difference between a party and a city-managed event, especially in the Zona Romántica, where narrow streets and heavy pedestrian traffic can turn small changes into larger disruptions.
Puerto Vallarta saw that during Pride week, when planned street closures affected Centro and the Zona Romántica as the parade and block party moved through the city. Vallarta Daily previously covered those Pride road closures before the May events began.
For Diversity Week, the city has not yet released a full public schedule of activities, street impacts, performers, or venue plans. Those details will be key for nearby businesses, taxi and rideshare movement, bus routes, deliveries, and evening crowds.
The Diversity Office gets a formal role
The city’s Subdirectorate of Sexual Diversity was named as the official operational link for the agreement. Its role will include follow-up on the convenio, coordination with municipal agencies, and preparation of the administrative file.
That office has become more visible this year. In January, Puerto Vallarta opened a Diversity Module inside UNIRSE, offering HIV and STI testing, PrEP guidance, and legal support for the LGBT+ community.
The Diversity Week agreement adds another public-facing responsibility for the office. This time, the work is not centered on services. It is tied to a city event with tourism, culture, and public spending attached.
The lone abstention came from independent councilor Melissa Madero. No public explanation for the abstention was reported during the session.
