Puerto Vallarta Says Hotel Bookings Hold Steady

Puerto Vallarta Says Hotel Bookings Hold Steady

Puerto Vallarta officials say the destination has avoided the hotel cancellation wave many feared after the February violence. The bigger weakness appears in app-based rentals. Canadian bookings are still coming in, and March events and the holiday weekend are now expected to steady demand. That leaves a more complex picture than the first headlines suggested. Tourism is still moving, but confidence is still under pressure as businesses watch whether the late-winter rebound can hold.

Hotels held firmer than expected

Puerto Vallarta is trying to separate the shock of the February 22 violence from its core tourism numbers. City tourism officials say mass hotel cancellations have not been reported. That matters because hotel demand is still the clearest daily signal of traveler confidence. Officials said the February figures were still being finalized as of March 5. Even so, they estimated hotel occupancy near 82 percent by the end of the month. For March, they placed occupancy at roughly 70 to 75 percent. That is below normal for the season. It is also far from the steep drop many in the sector feared. The softer point, according to the city, is short-term rentals booked through digital platforms. Some cancellations were reported there. That split suggests travelers may be reacting differently depending on how they book and how flexible their plans are. For now, the city’s message is simple: the destination took a hit, but the formal hotel market did not unravel.

Why the Canadian market matters

Officials also pointed to the Canadian market as a sign that demand has not broken. That matters in Puerto Vallarta, where Canada helps anchor the winter season. Hotels, restaurants, tours, and airlines all depend on that flow. City officials said Canadian travelers are still making reservations. They also said this segment appears less affected than some others. The broader recovery pattern supports that claim. Airlines suspended or adjusted service during the crisis, but flights began returning within days. Air Canada said Puerto Vallarta service would resume on February 24 with a modified schedule. It also added seats for affected travelers. Another signal comes next week. Gala Puerto Vallarta–Riviera Nayarit 2026 runs from March 10 to 12, bringing airlines, wholesalers, and buyers from Mexico, the United States, and Canada. None of that erases the security shock. It does suggest that the market most tied to Vallarta’s winter business is still engaged.

March will be the real test

The next test is not whether Puerto Vallarta stayed open. It is whether traveler confidence holds through the rest of March. The airport said it returned to about 95 percent of operations on February 24. That followed 47 canceled flights during the worst disruption. State officials then met with hotel operators, restaurateurs, tour companies, and transport providers. Their goal was clear. Keep events on the calendar, restore mobility, and prevent a security crisis from becoming an economic one. That approach may help the hotel sector first. It may take longer to reassure the more flexible Airbnb-style market, where cancellations are easier, and plans change fast. For residents, business owners, and foreign readers, the picture is now clearer than it was a week ago. The city is functioning, bookings continue, and the immediate shock has eased. Still, March will decide whether stability is truly returning or simply being tested weekend by weekend.
