Puerto Vallarta Wants World Cup Fans After Matches

Puerto Vallarta’s tourism sector is making an early play for World Cup visitors passing through Guadalajara in June 2026. The plan centers on campaigns with online travel agencies, social media promotion, and hotel packages aimed at fans from countries with matches in Jalisco. A local fan zone is also being discussed, though key details remain limited. The goal is clear: turn match trips in Guadalajara into added nights on the coast.

Puerto Vallarta Eyes World Cup Fans in Guadalajara

Puerto Vallarta’s hotel and tourism sector is preparing a campaign to draw World Cup visitors from Guadalajara to the coast during the 2026 tournament.

Daniel Torres, director of the Puerto Vallarta Hotel Association, said the effort involves the Jalisco Tourism Secretariat and the city’s tourism trust. The campaign is aimed at international and national fans expected to travel to Guadalajara for World Cup matches next June.

Guadalajara Stadium in Zapopan is scheduled to host four group-stage matches: Korea Republic vs. Czechia on June 11, Mexico vs. Korea Republic on June 18, Colombia vs. Congo DR on June 23, and Uruguay vs. Spain on June 26. Those games give Puerto Vallarta a narrow window to reach fans already planning travel in Jalisco.

Campaigns target fans before and after matches

The tourism strategy includes promotion through online travel agencies, social media, and hotel-led advertising tied to the tournament. Hotels are also preparing packages and promotions aimed at soccer fans who may want to add beach time before or after matches in Guadalajara.

Torres identified fans from Mexico, Colombia, Uruguay, Spain, and South Korea as part of the target market because those national teams are tied to the match dates in Guadalajara. The plan is to encourage travelers to include Puerto Vallarta on their trips rather than limit their visits to the Guadalajara metro area.

The pitch leans more on existing travel habits than on a new event calendar. Puerto Vallarta is already a major beach destination in Jalisco, and the campaign aims to connect that tourism base to the World Cup schedule in Guadalajara.

Fan zone plans remain limited

Puerto Vallarta is also expected to join the tournament atmosphere through a fan zone backed by the Jalisco government, with recreational activities and events for fans. The announcement did not include a final location, dates, or programming for the local fan zone.

Guadalajara’s official FIFA Fan Festival is scheduled for June 11 to July 19 at Plaza Liberación, with match broadcasts and public programming during the tournament. Puerto Vallarta’s plan appears separate from that of the main host-city festival, though both are tied to Jalisco’s effort to capture World Cup tourism beyond the stadium.

For the hotel sector, the campaign is also a bet on occupancy in June. The World Cup arrives during a period when beach destinations often look for extra demand outside the winter high season, and Guadalajara’s match calendar gives Puerto Vallarta a nearby audience already committed to travel.

Torres said the broader expectation is that World Cup-related tourism will extend beyond the match days in Guadalajara and generate regional economic activity. For now, the concrete pieces are the promotional campaign, hotel packages, and the expected fan zone, with more local details still pending.
