Puerto Vallarta is turning June’s international drug-prevention date into a three-week local campaign, but the schedule lands against a harder backdrop than public fairs and sports events. City officials are pairing school forums, beach activities, and training sessions with a wider push around treatment centers, early use, and social reintegration. The campaign begins at La Lija and ends on the Malecón, with a recent account by an official showing how closely the issue remains tied to everyday city emergencies.
Puerto Vallarta sets a June prevention calendar
Puerto Vallarta’s municipal government will run a drug-prevention campaign from June 5 to 26, using fairs, forums, sports events, and training to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The city confirmed the dates in an official municipal post, and the reviewed schedule shows events at La Lija, the UMA, the Malecón, Playa Sheraton, and the Tecnológico Superior de Jalisco campus.
The campaign is being led through the Subdirección de Prevención de Adicciones, the municipal office headed by Ana Patricia Martínez García. It brings together local and state health actors, including the Sistema Estatal de Salud Mental y Adicciones, Centro de Integración Juvenil, CECOSAMA, Red Rehabilita, and the Cabildo de la Diversidad.
The public calendar is only one part of the story. The city is also trying to show that prevention work can reach people before addiction turns into a crisis, and that treatment centers can be brought closer to formal health rules.
Puerto Vallarta created a dedicated addiction-prevention agency last year, when the city marked the same June observance with the TUCA Parade and a public forum. The new campaign now gives that office a broader public test, with events spread across schools, public spaces, and recovery networks.
UNODC, the United Nations office that coordinates World Drug Day messaging, says this year’s campaign focuses on persistent drug problems, new challenges, and innovative responses. It’s 2026 material names youth prevention, drug-market changes, data collection, and criminal-justice responses among the areas governments and civil society are being asked to address.
Events move from schools to the Malecón
The local schedule begins Friday, June 5, with the Feria de la Prevención de Adicciones at the Auditorio de La Lija from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. On Tuesday, June 9, a forum on addiction prevention for children and adolescents is scheduled at the UMA meeting room.
The campaign then moves into more visible public events. On Friday, June 12, the Arcos del Malecón will host “Botargas vs. las Adicciones,” a comic lucha libre event featuring costumed characters staging a symbolic fight against drugs. On Sunday, June 14, the “Preventón DJ” is scheduled to start at Playa Sheraton and end at Parque Lázaro Cárdenas.
A school rally is listed for June 19 at Escuela Secundaria Técnica 132. On June 23 and 24, training on the therapeutic community model is planned at the Tecnológico Superior de Jalisco in Puerto Vallarta. The campaign closes June 26 with a parade from Hotel Sheraton to the Arcos del Malecón, followed by a commemorative forum.
The dates and locations point to two audiences. Some events are designed to attract public attention, especially on the Malecón and the beach corridor. Others are aimed at students, families, treatment providers, and staff working more closely in addiction prevention.
Treatment work sits behind the public campaign
Martínez García has framed the municipal work as more than a calendar of symbolic events. She has described three lines of action since the office was created, including prevention campaigns, reintegration practices, and accompaniment for people in rehabilitation.
She also linked the work to the city’s recovery network. During the response to the recent landfill fire, she said that people in the late stages of rehabilitation were helped by sharing food with firefighters. She added that three pepenadores approached her there and said they “They needed help; they wanted to stop suffering.”
That account gives the June campaign a sharper edge. The issue is not limited to school talks or civic dates. It reaches workplaces, emergency scenes, informal labor, and families that may not enter a government office until the situation is already advanced.
The city also faces a treatment-system challenge. Jaime Fernando Díaz González, identified as a representative of the state mental health and addictions system, said 36 rehabilitation centers had been identified in Puerto Vallarta. Of those, he said only four had formal registration, while 22 were in the process of regularization.
He also said an estimated 1,800 people receive care in those spaces, though the number changes as people enter and leave treatment. In the same presentation, he said first contact with drugs is often reported around age 9, while specialized care is not usually sought until around age 19.
Those figures have not been presented as a full epidemiological study. They do, however, explain why the city is pairing public events with training and coordination with treatment centers.
The June 26 observance gives the municipality a public date to organize around. The harder measure will come after the parade, when officials must demonstrate that outreach, treatment referrals, and center regularization go beyond announcements.
