Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, July 8, 2026 – Puerto Vallarta’s drinking-water system has kept its state sanitary certification, a review that covers the quality controls behind the public supply network rather than every private building, cistern or tap in town.
SEAPAL Vallarta revalidated the certification through the Comisión para la Protección contra Riesgos Sanitarios del Estado de Jalisco, known as COPRISJAL. The utility said the recognition marks 35 consecutive years of certification tied to the city’s drinking-water supply system.
The certification also extends to the systems serving Las Palmas and the Ecoterra subdivision, according to SEAPAL. A July 7 local report said the utility’s certified supply includes water reaching homes and the tourism sector, though neither SEAPAL nor the local report published a street-by-street map of the certified network.
The distinction matters because the certificate speaks to the water SEAPAL produces, monitors and moves through its system. It does not automatically answer the separate question many households, condo buildings, hotels and restaurants face after water enters private pipes, rooftop tinacos, aljibes or cisterns.
SEAPAL said the revalidation is tied to three Mexican drinking-water standards. NOM-127-SSA1-2021 sets the permissible quality limits drinking water must meet. NOM-179-SSA1-2020 covers surveillance and evaluation of quality control in public supply systems. NOM-230-SSA1-2002 sets sanitary requirements and sampling procedures in public and private supply systems.
SEAPAL’s laboratory conducts continuous monitoring at supply sources, treatment plants, the distribution network, and household connections, using physicochemical and microbiological analyses. An outside laboratory accredited by the Entidad Mexicana de Acreditación verifies organoleptic, physical, chemical, bacteriological, and radiological parameters.
The certification arrives at a time when water service has remained a daily concern in several neighborhoods. SEAPAL reported June supply coverage near 97 percent and noted a 24-hour suspension affecting 136 colonies in the northern part of the city and upper El Pitillal due to highway-related line relocation work.
The utility has also expanded water-line flushing in Puerto Vallarta after pressure changes loosened iron and manganese deposits inside older pipes. SEAPAL said that work included points such as Versalles and Arboledas and described the reddish-brown color sometimes reported in tap water as a turbidity issue linked to naturally occurring minerals, not a toxicity warning.
SEAPAL said users should report turbidity or service problems through 073 or WhatsApp at 322 105 8226. Homes and buildings with cisterns, tinacos, or shared internal systems may also need to check private storage and maintenance, especially after outages, pressure changes, or nearby repair work.
