SEAPAL plans to clear 6.2 km of sewer line after spills in Versalles and Díaz Ordaz, with heavily blocked sections of Avenida México first in line.
Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, November 7, 2026 – SEAPAL said Friday it plans to clear 6.2 kilometers of the Centro–Norte sewer line with its own funds after recurring sewage spills in Versalles and Díaz Ordaz.
The first priority is Avenida México. SEAPAL operations director Alejandro Padilla estimated that buildup blocks up to 80% of the pipe in some spots. Crews plan to inspect the line with cameras and use mechanical equipment to pull out the buildup.
SEAPAL director Carlos Ruiz gave a tentative timeline at the meeting, saying the work could start in about two weeks and last roughly seven months. He said he would set a start date with the utility’s finance and operations teams. Mayor Luis Ernesto Munguía González pledged to address the spills before the next rainy season.
The plan follows an October meeting with Versalles residents where SEAPAL pledged to clear parts of the line and improve pumping but hadn’t identified funding. In its account of that meeting, the utility said Versalles sits low along the main sewer line, where extra water entering the pipes can make spills worse during heavy rains.
At the follow-up meeting, officials pointed to a maintenance backlog, rainwater flowing into the sewer from homes and businesses, and groundwater pumped into the same pipes. The plan also calls for more pumping capacity and backup equipment at the Planta de Tratamiento de Aguas Residuales Norte I.
SEAPAL also proposes putting meters on sewer connections at buildings and developments. The meters would help the utility trace where rainwater and pumped groundwater are entering pipes meant to carry sewage.
