Puerto Vallarta’s anniversary celebration will move into the streets Sunday, and city traffic will move around it. The municipal program brings afternoon and evening events to the Malecón and downtown, while traffic authorities plan closures on Morelos and route changes for public buses after 5 p.m. The change affects a short stretch of the Historic Center, but it sits on one of the main paths toward the Romantic Zone. Anyone crossing Centro late in the day will need a different plan.
Sunday Traffic in Vallarta Could Snarl Downtown Plans
Puerto Vallarta will close a downtown section of Morelos Street and redirect public transit on Sunday evening. The changes are tied to the city’s 108th anniversary as a municipality and 58th as a city.
The city’s official anniversary program places the main Sunday events around the Malecón, Los Arcos, and Plaza de Armas. Activities begin at 3 p.m. They include civic acts, regional music, an acrobatic squadron show, recognitions, fireworks, and late-night performances.
The street changes are expected to be in place by 5 p.m., according to a traffic notice issued for the anniversary events. That gives downtown a short window between the start of events and the traffic shift.
Morelos will close at Corona
The southbound flow on Morelos will be stopped at Corona. Drivers heading toward the Romantic Zone will be sent onto Juárez. That street is expected to operate temporarily in both directions.
The detour continues to Agustín Rodríguez. From there, drivers may return to Morelos and continue south. Traffic toward the Romantic Zone is expected to remain open beyond that point, according to the notice.
The reserved area covers Morelos from Corona to Agustín Rodríguez. It is a short stretch on a map. In traffic terms, it sits on a main downtown path between Centro and the south side of town.
Public buses will turn back north
Public transit routes will also change after 5 p.m. Buses are expected to cut their route at Perú and Panamá. They will then return north through Colombia.
The change affects riders who normally pass through the downtown corridor before continuing south. Bus stops near the closed section may not operate as usual during the evening.
The city asked drivers, pedestrians, and bus users to leave early. It also asked them to use alternate routes and follow the Transit and Road Safety staff. The reviewed notice did not include an end time for the closure. It also did not say whether extra rolling closures could be used if crowds build up around the Malecón.
Anniversary events move into downtown
The closure comes as the final night of the city’s 108th anniversary weekend plans moves into Centro.
An official visitor event page for the anniversary says Puerto Vallarta is marking 108 years as a municipality and 58 years as a city on May 31. It says the 1918 decree from the Jalisco Congress elevated the former Las Peñas settlement to municipal status and renamed it Puerto Vallarta. City status followed 50 years later.
Sunday’s program includes a 3 p.m. ceremony with honors to the flag at Los Arcos. Regional military music follows shortly after. The Águilas Aztecas acrobatic squadron is scheduled at 5:30 p.m. The official program also lists recognitions, music through the evening, and fireworks at 11:05 p.m.
