OXXO Robbery Attempt in Cancún Foiled by Police

Cancún, QR – A planned robbery attempt in Cancún, on Bonampak Avenue, unraveled Thursday morning when municipal officers arrived within minutes and engaged the suspect in a brief but violent confrontation, authorities said. This swift response to the robbery attempt in Cancún was instrumental in preventing greater harm during such an incident in the busy city.

The incident unfolded just after 10:00 a.m. outside an OXXO convenience store at the corner of Chichén Itzá Avenue and Bonampak Avenue in SM 3. According to the afternoon statement from Cancún Police, an armed man approached a motorist with the intent to steal. The robbery attempt in Cancún escalated when the suspect opened fire on the officers, triggering a Red Alert across the area.

Officers returned gunfire, striking the assailant in the leg. Despite his injury during the robbery attempt, the suspect attempted to flee on foot. He ran toward a nearby condominium complex, where pursuing officers cornered and subdued him. The robbery attempt in Cancún ended with him being found wounded and taken into custody before being transported under police guard to a hospital for treatment.

During the exchange of gunfire, one of the responding officers suffered a wound to his foot. Reports indicate the injury was sustained amid the confrontation; he was treated and remains in stable condition, police said.

In their public communication, Cancún Police highlighted the swift intervention by the Municipal Department of Citizen Security and Traffic during the robbery attempt on Bonampak Avenue. “Officers acted immediately to prevent the robbery of a motorist,” the statement read, emphasizing that the suspect fired at them while trying to escape. The police response, they added, ensured both the victim’s safety and the security of the surrounding area.

The apprehension came without further escalation, and no other civilians were reported injured following the robbery attempt canún. Authorities did not immediately release the identity of the suspect or details about any prior criminal record. The firearm carried by the alleged attacker was seized as evidence.

Police officials reaffirmed their commitment to protecting residents and visitors in the municipality. They framed the arrest as another example of proactive patrol work and rapid tactical response in the city center.

An investigation is underway to determine the full sequence of events, including whether the suspect acted alone and if the targeted motorist suffered any secondary damage or trauma during the attempted robbery. Authorities also plan to review body-worn footage and interview witnesses who were near the convenience store when the shooting occurred.

The quick containment of the situation and capture of the wounded suspect prevented what could have escalated into a broader public safety incident in a typically busy stretch of Bonampak Avenue. Residents and commuters in the area were briefly diverted while police secured the scene and gathered evidence.
