San Miguel Chamber Music Festival Enlivens Summer Stage

San Miguel de Allende, Gto. – Nestled in the heart of Guanajuato, San Miguel Chamber Music Festival makes its triumphant return this August. The Music Society of San Miguel (MSSM) stages three world-class concerts at the historic Teatro Ángela Peralta between August 2 and 13. Local leaders and tourists have filled the venue since its reopening as part of the 2025 Festival de las Artes San Miguel (FASMA).

Set in the Teatro Ángela Peralta, a 19th-century gem that anchors San Miguel’s cultural scene, the festival taps into a long tradition of August chamber music celebrations. The theater has hosted scores of events since its inauguration in 1873, bringing classical and contemporary works to eager audiences.

The opening concert on August 2, “Jonah Kim & Friends,” paired acclaimed cellist Jonah Kim with violinists Doori Na and Eric Silberger, alongside pianist Sean Kennard. Their program balanced Mendelssohn and Brahms with the world premiere of a new work by resident composer Sheridan Seyfried. The blend of time-honored masterworks and fresh compositions set an energetic tone for the weeks ahead.

On August 8, Dutch piano prodigy Gile Bae takes center stage. A Bösendorfer Artist and competition winner, Bae’s solo recital spans Bach and Prokofiev. The performance promises a mix of disciplined elegance and bold expression, reflecting the pianist’s growing global acclaim.

The series culminates on August 13 with a vibrant Afro-Cuban jazz tribute led by seven-time Grammy nominee Jesús “Chuchito” Valdés. Joined by his trio and guest multi-instrumentalist Nader Khaledi, Valdés honors his family’s musical legacy in a set that fuses Cuban rhythms with improvisation. This closing concert bridges chamber music formality and spirited jazz flair.

Local and Youth Engagement

Running alongside the concerts is the Summer Educational Program (August 2–9). It features youth strings academy workshops, masterclasses with visiting artists, and the Rising Stars Showcase—a competition and gala concert at Hotel La Morada on August 9. Emerging talents from around the world vie for recognition and mentorship, reinforcing the festival’s commitment to music education.

“We’re making San Miguel a summer music capital,” said MSSM director Luis Eduardo Quezada, noting strong turnout from residents and travelers alike. This blend of professional artistry and community engagement underlines why San Miguel de Allende shines as a cultural beacon well beyond its famed visual arts and colonial architecture.
