Spain–Guanajuato flight to spur 20% rise in tourism

Spain–Guanajuato flight to spur 20% rise in tourism

Guanajuato is set to get a direct flight connection with Spain, a move that local officials say could dramatically boost tourism and economic ties. The newly announced route linking Madrid and central Mexico promises easier access for European travelers to Guanajuato’s colonial treasures, including San Miguel de Allende. Local leaders are optimistic, projecting significant growth in visitors and forging new international partnerships along the way—suggesting this is just the beginning of a broader tourism push.

In a move set to deepen ties between Mexico and Spain, the state of Guanajuato has secured its first direct flight to Europe. Governor Libia Dennise García announced the new Madrid–Guanajuato route at Spain’s FITUR tourism expo in late January, projecting that it will launch later this year. Officials say this direct connection could boost the number of Spanish tourists visiting Guanajuato by more than 20% in its first year of operation.

The route will be operated by the Spanish airline Air Europa, linking Madrid’s Barajas Airport directly to Guanajuato’s Bajío International Airport (near the city of León). It is slated to start with two flights per week, offering roughly 50,000 seats per year. Guanajuato authorities expect at least 40% of those travelers will be visitors from Spain. By eliminating layovers and lengthy transfers via other airports, the direct flight will make travel between Spain and central Mexico much faster and more convenient. Officials also anticipate a spillover effect: with Madrid as a hub, more tourists from across Europe could now include Guanajuato in their Mexico itineraries. Governor García estimated that European tourism to the state could grow by another 22% thanks to easier connections through Spain.

San Miguel de Allende Stands to Benefit

Spain is already one of Guanajuato’s most important tourism markets. In 2025, around 201,000 Spanish nationals visited the state, making Spain the second-largest source of international tourists after the United States. Much of that interest centers on Guanajuato’s cultural gems, like San Miguel de Allende. The picturesque colonial city (a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a sizable expat community) already counts Spanish visitors as its second-largest group of foreign tourists, after Americans. Local hospitality leaders expect the new Madrid link will bring even more European guests interested in history and culture. Jorge Olalde Chávez, president of San Miguel’s hotel association, noted that this connection opens up central Mexico to travelers who might otherwise stick to beach resorts. With easier access, more Spaniards and other Europeans may now explore Guanajuato’s colonial cities and traditions, rather than limiting their trips to sun-and-sand destinations.

Partnerships Forged at FITUR

State officials see the Madrid flight as part of a broader strategy to elevate Guanajuato’s profile abroad. During the FITUR event in Spain, the Guanajuato delegation pursued an intensive agenda of business meetings and networking. In total, the state government reported holding hundreds of meetings with airlines, tour operators, hotel chains, and investors, resulting in over 30 new international partnership agreements. Representatives from San Miguel de Allende were among those pitching the state’s attractions: San Miguel’s team alone held 43 business meetings. They also joined with the cities of Querétaro and Guanajuato Capital to launch a joint regional promotion initiative called “Bajío, Mexico Begins Here,” aimed at attracting European visitors to central Mexico. One new offering geared toward these travelers is a “religious tourism” route linking several historic towns – Silao, Guanajuato City, Dolores Hidalgo, and San Miguel de Allende – highlighting the region’s sacred sites and heritage. Guanajuato further strengthened ties with Spain by signing a cooperation agreement with the Spanish region of Castilla-La Mancha to promote cultural exchange and collaborative tourism projects.

For Guanajuato, the new Madrid flight is more than just a transportation link – it’s a cornerstone in an ongoing effort to position the state as a global destination. By improving connectivity and building international alliances, officials hope to see not only a surge in visitor numbers but also a lasting increase in foreign investment and cultural exchange. Spain already ranks among the top foreign investors in Guanajuato (with over $430 million USD invested and thousands of local jobs created), and easier travel could encourage even greater economic collaboration. As this direct route takes off, Guanajuato is poised to welcome a growing wave of European tourists and forge deeper ties with its Spanish partners, marking an exciting new chapter for the region’s tourism industry.
