The Marine Plan “Operation Lifesaving, Winter 2023” begins in Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – The Secretary of the Navy, in collaboration with the XII Naval Zone, has announced the commencement of “Operation Lifesaver, Winter 2023” on Wednesday, December 13th. This operation is a crucial component of the Marina Plan, aiming to provide security and surveillance to ensure the safety of both domestic and international tourists visiting the country’s primary tourist destinations during the holiday season, spanning from December 16th to January 7th, 2024.

The operation will be conducted on the beaches with the highest tourist footfall in Jalisco and other tourist hubs under the jurisdiction of the Mexican Navy, in its capacity as the Coast Guard. This effort is in close coordination with Civil Protection agencies and various government institutions at all levels.

According to a statement from the Mexican Navy (SEMAR), a total of 154 naval personnel have been deployed for this operation, including Admirals, Captains, Officers, Classes, Sailors, and civilian staff. Additionally, nine units have been mobilized, including two ships dedicated to maritime surveillance, two smaller vessels for sea rescues, and five land units providing support for people’s safety and surveillance. The primary mission of this deployment is to safeguard human life at sea, emphasizing lifeguard actions, medical support, maritime, air, and land security.

Participating in this operation is the Naval Search, Rescue, and Maritime Surveillance Station ENSAR-VALLARTA, equipped with specialized personnel, along with personnel from other naval commands.

SEMAR has underscored the significance of adhering to the directives issued by the Port Captaincy regarding sea conditions and tide levels. These levels are denoted by flags of different colors: green signifies favorable conditions for swimming, bathing, or diving; yellow indicates caution due to ocean currents and potential worsening weather; and red serves as a warning that it is unsafe to enter the sea.

To enhance safety, aid and rescue stations will be set up where lifeguards and Naval Health personnel will provide initial medical assistance to those in need.

The Secretary of the Navy encourages the general population to consider the following recommendations while enjoying their time at the beaches:

  1. Continue adhering to COVID-19 prevention measures (maintain social distancing, frequent hand washing, use of hand sanitizer, etc.).
  2. Follow the instructions provided by lifeguards.
  3. Keep a watchful eye on children while on the beaches.
  4. Avoid entering the sea after consuming food or alcoholic beverages.
  5. Swim in close proximity to life-saving equipment.
  6. Avoid swimming in areas with maritime traffic (boats or jet skis).
  7. If using smaller boats (boats), ensure they are not overloaded, wear appropriate life jackets, and ensure they fit each user.
  8. Do not obstruct access to the beaches, and leave paths clear for patrols and ambulances.
  9. Use sunscreen to protect against the sun’s rays.
  10. Stay hydrated by drinking water regularly.
  11. Refrain from littering on the beaches.

For sea-related emergencies, citizens can contact the XII Naval Zone at 322-221-11-23. Furthermore, the Secretary of the Navy has provided the following contact number: 800 627 4621 (800 MARINA 1) for assistance and information.
