The new Tren Maya is giving travelers an extra reason to ride this holiday season. For all of November and December, anyone who buys a one-way ticket on the Maya Train will get the return journey free of charge. This limited-time 2-for-1 deal – officially called “Viaja y te regalamos el regreso” (“Travel and we give you the return”) – aims to boost passenger numbers on Mexico’s ambitious rail project through the year’s end.
Tren Maya Free Return Trips Promotion Returns
Officials say the free return trips promotion was a proven hit during the summer. Germán Redondo Suárez, head of the Tren Maya’s Corporate Strategy, noted that a similar offer during the last vacation period drove an 80% surge in ridership. With that success in mind, the state-run operator is betting that bringing the deal back now will yield a repeat bump in travelers – and support tourism businesses across the Yucatán Peninsula in the process. The concept is straightforward: buy an outbound ticket to any destination on the Maya Train’s route, and your trip back will cost nothing. For families and explorers on a budget, the savings could make a regional getaway much more appealing.
The timing is no coincidence. Late fall through year-end includes major holiday travel waves in Mexico, from the Día de Muertos period to the Christmas and New Year’s season. By sweetening the pot with free return fares, the Maya Train is hoping to entice more locals and domestic tourists to choose rail over driving or flying for their holiday trips. The railway connects key cultural and natural sites across five states – Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo – making it a convenient option for those looking to explore the Mayan world without the hassle of air travel. And now, it’s a more affordable option as well.
Local Riders Embrace the Maya Train Deal
Early indicators suggest that the promotion is resonating, particularly on the most popular routes like Mérida–Cancún. Those two cities anchor Tren Maya’s busiest segment, and increased traffic there means more business for hotels, restaurants, and tour operators at both ends of the line. Rail officials project closing out 2025 with about 1.2 million passengers carried since launch – a target they were already 84% of the way to even before the winter rush. They’re optimistic that this year-end push will help hit or even surpass that milestone.
Passengers taking advantage of the deal span various backgrounds. Notably, a large portion of current riders are local residents of the southeastern states, followed by Mexican tourists from other regions. This suggests the Maya Train is steadily becoming the preferred way for people to discover the rich cultural, natural, and historical attractions of the Yucatán Peninsula without boarding a plane. By making round-trip excursions more accessible, the government’s flagship train project is doubling down on its dual mission: boosting tourism and providing a social service for regional mobility.
The Tren Maya only began operations in late 2023, and it’s still expanding in stages. It now operates 34 stations across its loop through the peninsula. While the project has faced challenges, initiatives like the free-return promotion demonstrate how officials are actively trying to build ridership and integrate the train into people’s travel plans. The railway also continues to offer standing discounts for seniors, students, teachers, and persons with disabilities to make travel inclusive.
As the promotion rolls on through December 31, many travelers are likely to seize the chance for an affordable adventure. After all, a visit to the pyramids of Chichén Itzá or a weekend in the beach towns of Quintana Roo becomes even more attractive when you know the ride home is on the house. With the Maya Train now competing against buses and cars, a little year-end generosity might be just the ticket to get more people on board and keep this new train’s momentum going into the new year.
