Uber rides in Puerto Vallarta are getting one more step before the car moves. The company’s PIN verification system is meant to reduce wrong-car pickups and add a check at crowded pickup points, from nightlife streets to airport-area meeting spots. The change comes as Mexico prepares for World Cup travel pressure across several cities, including Puerto Vallarta, where ride-hailing already creates its own airport confusion.
Uber adds another check before the ride starts
Uber riders in Puerto Vallarta should expect greater attention to PIN verification as Mexico approaches the heavy travel period around the 2026 World Cup.
The feature gives the rider a four-digit code inside the app. The driver must enter that code before the trip can begin. Uber’s own PIN Personal instructions say the code appears on the same screen as the driver’s name and vehicle plate, giving riders one more check before stepping into the car.
The system is simple, but it changes the rhythm of a pickup. The passenger should confirm the vehicle plate, the driver name, and the PIN before closing the door. The ride does not start in the app until the driver enters the correct number.
Uber says users can activate PIN verification for all rides or for night rides through the app’s safety settings. The company also says the code can be personalized, which means a rider can use a number that is easier to remember than a random code that changes from trip to trip.
Puerto Vallarta is included in the World Cup rollout
Puerto Vallarta is not a World Cup host city. It is still included in Uber’s broader Mexico safety rollout for the tournament period, alongside Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Los Cabos, and Cancún.
Cecilia Román, Uber’s security communications manager in Mexico, said the system is being rolled out gradually so users can have “the same PIN for all trips.” The company has tied the measure to crowded travel conditions expected around World Cup 2026, when airports, hotels, restaurants, stadium zones, and fan gathering areas are expected to see heavier movement.
Puerto Vallarta is a major tourism destination, not a match venue, and its busiest pickups already tend to happen in places where several cars may be waiting at once. Hotel entrances, late-night streets, restaurant corridors, and airport-area meeting points are exactly the settings where a wrong-car mistake can happen quickly.
Uber’s Puerto Vallarta ride page continues to list the service as available in the city. The company’s Mexico cities list also includes Puerto Vallarta among its operating markets.
The airport wrinkle remains
The new PIN step does not resolve the broader ride-hailing dispute over airport pickups.
Puerto Vallarta has spent months in the middle of Mexico’s uneven fight over app-based rides at airport terminals. That context still matters. A PIN can help confirm the right vehicle. It does not determine where drivers may legally load passengers within federal airport zones, nor does it eliminate the possibility of enforcement confusion at terminal curbs.
Uber’s public affairs director in Mexico, Diego Martínez, said the company’s airport operation would remain normal during the World Cup period, even as talks continued with federal transport authorities. The company has also warned that regulatory uncertainty at airports could become a pressure point as Mexico receives tournament traffic.
That national airport dispute is separate from the rider’s immediate safety check. The PIN is about confirming the trip inside the app. Airport access is about where that trip can begin without friction.
What riders should do before getting in
The safest use of Uber PIN verification is not complicated. Open the app before the car arrives. Match the plate number. Check the driver’s name and photo. Give the PIN only after the car and driver match what the app shows.
The code should not be handed out to someone approaching on foot or calling from an unverified number. It should be used with the driver assigned in the app, at the pickup point shown in the trip.
This will matter most in Puerto Vallarta at crowded pickup spots, where several cars may stop in the same lane. It also matters after dinner, after bars close, during rain, and anywhere a rider may feel rushed to get into the first car that slows down.
