Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, July 10, 2026 — Puerto Vallarta hotels entered the summer vacation period with occupancy near 55 percent, leaving the destination below its projected seasonal average after two months of sharply lower airport traffic.
The initial estimate was reported after speaking with local hotel directors. Occupancy is expected to rise as school vacations begin and more families travel later in July.
Federal tourism officials are projecting an average hotel occupancy rate of 64.4 percent in Puerto Vallarta between July 20 and August 30. The Tourism Ministry’s summer forecast also anticipates a modest increase in hotel arrivals compared with the same vacation period last year.
Reaching that projection would require a clear improvement from the 55 percent level reported at the start of the season.
Hotel operators are placing much of their confidence in domestic travelers arriving from Guadalajara, Mexico City, Monterrey, Tijuana, and cities across the Bajío. New Volaris routes linking Puerto Vallarta with Puebla, Aguascalientes, and San Luis Potosí may also help expand access from central Mexico during the summer months.
The slower opening follows a difficult first half of the year at Puerto Vallarta International Airport.
Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico recorded 415,400 terminal passengers in June, down 18.7 percent from the same month in 2025. Domestic traffic fell 6 percent, while international traffic dropped 33.4 percent.
Over the first six months of 2026, the airport handled nearly 484,000 fewer passengers than during the same period last year. VallartaDaily previously reported the airport’s first-half decline and the especially steep reduction in international travel.
Airport passenger totals do not directly measure hotel demand. Puerto Vallarta’s airport also serves Riviera Nayarit, and its figures count both arrivals and departures. The sustained decline still shows that fewer people are moving through the region by air than one year ago.
Some hotel executives believe vacation travel was delayed until the end of the World Cup, which concludes July 19. Families may have chosen to remain home during the final weeks of the tournament before beginning summer trips.
No public booking data has been released showing how many Puerto Vallarta reservations were postponed because of the World Cup. The expected post-tournament increase remains an industry forecast rather than a confirmed surge in bookings.
The tournament has generated some tourism activity in the region. State figures cited by VallartaDaily estimated an economic benefit of 438 million pesos across Puerto Vallarta and Jalisco’s Pueblos Mágicos.
Hotel executive Jorge Peralta said that occupancy could increase from 55 percent to approximately 75 percent during the strongest weeks of the vacation period. He also warned that the overall summer season may finish five to seven percentage points below last year.
That estimate is not necessarily inconsistent with the federal projection. A hotel occupancy rate near 75 percent during selected late-July or August weeks could still produce a seasonal average closer to 64 percent when slower days are included.
The wider concern is how much of the summer rebound reaches businesses outside the major hotels. A slower opening can reduce restaurant traffic, tour reservations, taxi trips, nightlife spending, and sales at small businesses that depend on the vacation calendar.
A sustained rise toward the federal projection would suggest the 55 percent opening reflected the timing of school vacations. Continued weakness would add to signs that Puerto Vallarta’s tourism economy is experiencing a slower year.
