Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, June 25, 2026 – Puerto Vallarta police arrested a 25-year-old man Sunday morning after a rooftop chase through the southern downtown grid and recovered a safe containing 40,130 pesos.
The suspect, identified in local reports as Junior Antonio Joya Reyes, was detained on June 21 after neighbors reported a shirtless man jumping across rooftops near Aquiles Serdán and Aguacate.
The safe was later identified by a woman from Xuper Cosas, who told authorities she planned to file a formal complaint. Police turned the suspect over to the Ministerio Público.
Chase crossed rooftops, streets and private property
The search began after a neighbor reported seeing the man enter private property. Officers moved through the block and followed him across rooftops near Aguacate, Aquiles Serdán, and Francisco I. Madero.
Reporte Diario Vallarta reported that officers reached the suspect on the rooftop of a home on Aguacate, where he resisted before police detained him.
Tribuna de la Bahía reported that officers found sandals during the search and later spotted the suspect moving across rooftops near Francisco I. Madero. The arrest happened at about 7:30 a.m.
Police found a backpack containing the safe. The money totaled 40,130 pesos in bills and coins.
The case now moves to prosecutors
A judge later ordered one year of preventive detention while the investigation continues. That keeps the suspect in custody, but it does not mean he has been convicted.
The business owner’s complaint gives prosecutors a path for investigation. In theft cases, police need more than recovered property. They need a formal claim, ownership records, and enough evidence to connect the property to the suspect.
Shop robberies have sharpened security concerns
The arrest comes as shop owners and neighborhood groups continue pressing for faster police response after robberies and attempted robberies in Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas.
