Very Mexican Friday

Very Mexican Friday starts statewide in Quintana Roo

Quintana Roo will roll out the first Very Mexican Friday on September 26, a monthly initiative to support local businesses and keep money in neighborhood shops. The state says this is part of a broader national effort backed by business chambers, with a digital map and storefront stickers to help shoppers find participating businesses. Leaders frame it as culture and commerce working together: pride in what’s made here, and a hand up for family-run stores. The promise is simple—more customers, steadier jobs, stronger communities.

Very Mexican Friday arrives in Quintana Roo this Friday, Sept. 26, as part of a national effort to steer shoppers toward family-run stores and formal businesses—then repeat it every last Friday of the month. Governor Mara Lezama announced the state’s rollout, positioning it as culture plus commerce: pride in what’s made here and a practical nudge to spend close to home. The opening edition is set for September 26, with the program to recur monthly thereafter.

The campaign ties into what organizers and officials describe as Plan México, a broader initiative aimed at strengthening the internal market. The national business chamber Concanaco-Servytur is at the forefront: its president, Octavio de la Torre, has pitched Very Mexican Friday as a permanent program, complete with a registration drive, storefront stickers, and a geolocated digital map so families can find participating shops and promotions around them. The federal government’s own transcript also set the cadence: every last Friday of the month, with the first big day on September 26.

In Quintana Roo, authorities expect a wide take-up. State communications pointed to a goal of tens of thousands of local establishments across commerce, services, and tourism, while highlighting the state’s more than 68,000 businesses that anchor the “real economy.” At the launch in Cancún, the city’s mayor joined state leaders and Concanaco’s national president to urge residents to buy local—not just for discounts, but to keep paychecks and opportunity within their neighborhoods.

What will shoppers actually see? Organizers say participating storefronts will carry an official sticker and QR code that links to that digital map of deals and registered businesses. The chamber’s materials describe it as a national “movement” to favor Mexican-made products and formal businesses; in practical terms, it’s a simple, recurring shopping day that’s easy to recognize and remember. The idea is repetition: one Friday a month, statewide, so customers build a habit of checking the map and choosing a local option first.

The timing isn’t accidental. With post-holiday tourism easing in parts of Quintana Roo and household budgets tight, a predictable end-of-month event could help smooth foot traffic for small retailers and eateries that rely heavily on weekend sales. Local officials leaned into that argument at the Cancún launch, pairing economic language with a sense of community pride. It’s not only about discounts, they said; it’s about mornings when the neighborhood bakery sells out early because neighbors chose the shop on their corner.

What to watch next

Two things will determine whether this sticks. First, the map must be helpful—accurate, updated, and complete with real offers—so families view it as the starting point for their Friday plans. Second, small shops need to feel it in the till. Concanaco has framed Very Mexican Friday as permanent but subject to review after the first month. If owners see enough lift, it won’t need much marketing: customers will mark their calendars, and the sticker in the window will do the rest. For now, the proof will be on sidewalks this Friday.
