Worker Dies in Slab Collapse at Cancún Riu Hotel Site

A remodeling accident at a Cancún hotel has left one worker dead and raised questions about what happened inside the construction area. Authorities closed the site while civil protection officials and prosecutors began reviewing the collapse. Early reports gave conflicting casualty figures, but the later official account confirmed one death after the worker was taken to a private hospital.

Worker dies after collapse during remodeling work

A worker died after a concrete slab collapsed during remodeling work at the Riu Península hotel in Cancún’s Hotel Zone.

The accident occurred Tuesday evening at the hotel, located along Boulevard Kukulcán. Workers were carrying out construction tasks when the structure gave way.

Authorities reported that the injured worker was taken to a private hospital. He died after arriving there.

Early reports about the number of victims varied. The civil protection account listed one injured worker who died after being transported for medical care.

Construction area closed while authorities investigate

The construction area was closed after the collapse. Civil protection officials secured the site while authorities began reviewing the cause of the accident.

The Fiscalía General del Estado was notified so prosecutors could carry out the corresponding investigation. Officials are expected to review the conditions of the work area and the safety measures in place at the time.

Reports from the scene placed the collapse around 7 p.m. Some accounts said the emergency report was made more than an hour later. That timeline is likely to be part of the review.

No arrests had been reported in connection with the accident.

Hotel says worker was with outside contractor

The hotel said the worker was part of an outside contractor’s team. It also said emergency and safety protocols were activated after the accident.

The company said it was cooperating with authorities as they investigate what caused the collapse. The case remains under review by civil protection and prosecutorial officials.

The case highlights hotel remodeling work in the Hotel Zone, where construction, renovation, and emergency access can affect workers, guests, and nearby traffic.
