Mexico has a list of sites considered World Heritage of UNESCO, 35 to be exact. They are divided between mixed, cultural and natural goods. In the list of natural assets we find six sites, know them!
Sian Ka’an in Quintana Roo, since 1987
Its name in Mayan means ‘where the sky is born’ or ‘door of heaven’. How beautiful, no? And it is not far from reality. This reserve is the largest protected area in the Caribbean. It is located in the Yucatan Peninsula, two hours from Cancun and is home to many species of flora and fauna such as the tapir, manatee, peccary and jaguar. It has a beautiful landscape due to its beaches, underground rivers, cenotes, coral reefs and jungle. It is an ideal place for water activities and to live with nature. The purity and the blueness of its waters will make you feel that you swim in the sky.
Whale sanctuary ‘El Vizcaíno’, since 1993
Besides that the landscape is beautiful, it is the most important place in the world for the protection of the gray whale. Every year thousands of them arrive at the lagoons ‘Ojo de Liebre’ and ‘San Ignacio’ due to their climatic conditions. The sanctuary runs from the San Francisco and Santa Marta mountain ranges to the Pacific Ocean and is also home to California sea lions, dolphins and blue whales.
Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California, since 2005
In total there are 244 islands, islets and coastal areas. The beauty of the place is spectacular thanks to its impressive sea, cliffs, beaches, hundreds of species of plants and the wide variety of fish, marine mammals and cetaceans. Here important biological processes occur (that’s why it’s known as a natural laboratory), which is why many scientists do research. It is perfect for ecotourism.
Reserve of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere, since 2008
The monarch butterfly is the species that travels the most distance to migrate and it is still a mystery how they find their way home, but they always arrive at this reserve located between Michoacán and the State of Mexico. The vegetation and climate of the place allow an incredible spectacle of nature: the arrival of this lepidopteran from Canada. The trees like the oyamel, the pinabeto, the pine and the willow are colored orange and black to cover themselves completely with these butterflies and make this one of the most beautiful natural assets.
El Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve, since 2013
It is located in Sonora and here are the largest sand and ash dunes of America. This dessert is home to many animals such as the antelope and monster of Gila, a protected species. It has huge craters, eruptions of underground water with lava and volcanoes that amaze will anyone.
Archipelago of Revillagigedo, since 2016
It is located south of Cabo San Lucas, in the mere Pacific Ocean. The islands Socorro, Clarion, San Benedicto and the Islote Roca Partida, form the majestic landscape where the cliffs and the volcanoes that emerge from the sea stand out. It has a great variety of flora and fauna and there are very important biological processes. Also, the humpback whales love this place!
